Indo Kiwi

Indo Kiwi

Fox River, West Coast

Indo Kiwi is set on a coastal property on the famous Great Coast Highway, 65 minutes from Greymouth, 35 minutes from Westport and just a seven-minute drive from Punakaiki (site of the 'Pancake Rocks').

On arrival, you'll step through the garden doors, to a private, peaceful paradise.

Inspired by Balinese culture and style, the hut is set amongst stunning sub-tropical gardens with resort-style landscaping. Palms, ferns and colourful flowers are abundant in this immaculate garden - complete with an outdoor bath and shower, fire pit and fish pond.

The hut, containing a queen bed, opens out to a covered deck with a large Indonesian style daybed - is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while watching a kaleidoscope of colours move across the West Coast evening sky.

Indo Kiwi is truly a place to reconnect with nature. With sensational views, sunsets, birdsong, peace and quiet and the ever-present lull of the sea, you'll feel completely immersed in this incredible West Coast wilderness.

  • Eating and Drinking

Indo Kiwi is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the BBQ and facilities provided in your covered, outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Punakaiki is just a 15-minute drive away and Charleston is approximately 8 minutes away. Both have cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Supermarkets for food shopping can be found in either Westport (35-minute drive) or Greymouth (65-minute drive), so best to stock up before you arrive!

  • Things to do

With beautifully landscaped grounds, an outdoor tub, fire pit area and views to die for - you'll appreciate the chance to just relax and take in the vibes.

If you are looking for something to do - you'll find it. Just below the hut, you'll find Woodpecker Bay - head down to check out the caves, swim and walk on the beach.

Down the road in Punakaiki, you can take in the natural wonder of the spectacular Pancake Rocks with a short loop walk. Fox River (a short 2-minute drive South of the hut) has a scenic 2 hour bush walk up the river valley and the Pororari Riverwalk (15 minutes drive south) is a 'must do'.

Kayaking, underwater rafting, glow-worm caves and even expert stargazing are all just some of the things to do in the immediate area.

  • Your hosts

Nigel and Tracey Oates are your hosts at Indo Kiwi. They live on the property, with their dog Patch, pet sheep called Lambit and their 35 fabulous chickens.

Nigel is a true Coaster born and bred in Greymouth, and spent his weekends at Fox River at his family bach, until his parents sold it. Five years later, in his early twenties, he brought the land they now live on. Tracey is originally from Christchurch but spent her school holidays on the West Coast at her father's and stepmother's land at Fox River.

Nigel was a digger operator for years, worked for himself and for the Ghost Road walking and cycling track. Tracey imported from Indonesia for 10 years, and now makes homemade mustards, relishes and jams which she sells at the Fox River market.

Nigel and Tracey set up Indo-Kiwi after friends and family remarked upon how relaxed and recharged they felt after staying with them. The natural beauty, the sound of the ocean and the heavy West Coast rain on a tin roof are all part of the joys of living in this marvellous place - which they love to share. Combining their creative talents and love of all things Indonesian, Tracey and Nigel have indeed created a stunning escape from the real world.
