Kauri Tree Hut

Kauri Tree Hut

Mangawhai, Kaipara

Kauri Tree Hut is just 1 1/2 hours drive from Auckland central, in beautiful Mangawhai.

Kauri Tree Hut is actually made up of three little huts - a bedroom and lounge hut, bathroom hut, and kitchen hut - all connected by a surrounding deck. The three huts are built on stilts deep amongst remnant native bush, with Kauri trees coming up through the deck, and all around the huts.

The huts have been lovingly restored and beautifully styled, with every detail thought through. Large opening doors and windows connect you to the natural surroundings. A deep, oversized bath and outdoor shower give you the chance to truly relax with nature, in complete privacy.

Kauri Tree Hut is a city-dwellers tonic... Set amongst the wild and native surroundings, you can completely immerse yourself in nature. Relaxing in the hammock or swing chair provided, you'll hear the lazy trickle of the gentle creek that runs along the bottom of the property. Native birds flit through the surrounding bush, and at night you'll hear morepork and sometimes even kiwi. The spectacular views just a short walk from the huts, mean you can take in the sunset over the surrounding hills and ocean.

If you can drag yourself away, Mangawhai village is just a 5 minute drive to great coffee and food. Nearby vineyards and olive groves are great for tastings, and the Mangawhai markets on a Saturday are a 'must visit'. Adventurous types can soak up the action with mountain bikes, nearby walks and of course, the beautiful Mangawhai beaches.

  • Your Hosts

Ryan and Rachel married 9 years ago - and now have 3 kids, all under 5 years of age. Ryan is a landscaper and interior plant designer - and an outdoors fanatic. He loves surfing, hunting and outdoor adventures. Rachel is a super-mum with a marketing background, and a very creative eye. She has recently studied interior design - in between changing nappies! She loves to decorate and style spaces, parties, photo shoots and everyday life. She is also nuts about the outdoors.

They started looking for land in Northland a few years ago. The idea was to find somewhere to escape Auckland on the weekends and have some real adventures as a family. They stumbled across the land at Mangawhai and realised it was their dream property; with beautiful native bush, a gentle stream, and proximity to a great surf for Ryan's surfing obsession.

With their combined talents, Ryan and Rachel have been restoring the land and the old huts. Ryan mostly welding the hammer and Rachel foraging far and wide for the perfect decorative touches to make these huts feel warm, relaxing and peaceful.

The huts have been set up to be eco-friendly, with solar lights, rain water collection and a composting toilet. Recycled native timbers and materials have also been a big feature of the restoration of the huts.
