Billy Goat Bach is roughly half way between Napier and Gisborne, and just 10 minutes from Wairoa in Northern Hawkes Bay.
The bach is set on a rugged Hawkes Bay farm, on the banks of the beautiful Wairoa River.
Created by a fun-loving family with a heap of artistic flair, Billy Goat Bach is a large, single room hut sleeping up to four. A large, covered deck off the bach has an outdoor kitchen, dining and lounging area, with views overlooking the river. A kiwi hot tub is perfectly situated to soak and socialise.
The surrounding trees and land provide plenty of space for extras to bring along tents... So it's no problem to bring along friends for extra company.
A stay at Billy Goat Bach, is a fun-filled family adventure... The river is perfect for swimming and kayaking, and keen fishing folk can catch trout for dinner - right in front of the bach. Horsey families can bring along horses and enjoy the fantastic farm riding, arena and jump paddock. Get the kids cooking damper on the campfire, or even whitebait fritters made from the whitebait they caught themselves in the rapids on the river - a 2 minute walk from the bach.
The region has a ton to offer for adventures off the property too... Mahia beach, famous Morere Hot Springs and Lake Waikaremona are all just 40 minutes away.

A 10% deposit is charged during the booking process. The deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
Rates and Extras
MINIMUM STAY PERIODS
Billy Goat Bach has a standard minimum stay period of two nights. The minimum booking period for long weekends such as Labour Weekend, Anniversary Weekend etc is 3 nights. The minimum booking period for Easter is 4 nights. Billy Goat Bach also has a minimum stay of 4 nights for stays over the Christmas and New Year period.
Where there is a single night gap between bookings during the peak period (20 December - 28 February), it may be possible to book that single night with a surcharge of $30. If you are interested in this option, please email us with your date request.
The standard nightly peak rate is $250 for up to 4 people.
Additional people (campers) are $20 per person, per night
HOW TO BOOK AND PAY
The quickest way to check availability and book is by using our online booking calendar. This is always up-to-date. Find the date that suits you, then click Book Now. You'll be taken through the booking process in a few easy steps.
During the booking process, you’ll be asked to pay a 10% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. Once you've completed the booking process and deposit payment, you'll receive a confirmation email. This explains how to pay the remainder of your balance, which is due 4 weeks prior to your arrival date. If you’ve booked within this timeframe, the full balance will be due straight away. We’ll provide bank account details for payment by Internet Banking deposit in the email, and we also provide a secure link so you can opt to pay by credit card. Credit card payments incur a 2.5% surcharge.
Give the gift of glamping! Gift Vouchers are available for all of our Canopy Camping Escapes glamping sites. These are provided in electronic format, for you to print out and pop in a greeting card for the lucky recipient. Read more about our gift vouchers, including how to purchase one, here.
You'll park at the house and walk the 200 metres along the river to the bach. Your gear will be transported to the bach on the quad bike trailer. In summer if the farm track is in good condition, it may be possible to drive your car right up to the bach.

SLEEPING & BED ARRANGEMENT
Billy Goat Bach sleeps up to 4 people. Two in the queen bed and two in the bunk bed. Both the queen bed and the bunk bed are in the same single, large room. We think Billy Goat Bach best suits either a couple, or a family of up to a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children.
In summer, guests are welcome to expand their group and bring tents to pitch at the campsite.
Billy Goat Bach is completely off-the-grid. Hot water is heated using a gas califont and cooking gas is supplied via LPG gas bottles. Solar power provides lighting and a wood-burning stove provides warmth.
The bathroom facilities include a flushing toilet, hot shower and basin, all situated about 40m from the bach. A wood and gas powered 'Kiwi Hot Tub' is set on the deck.
The kitchen is integrated into the outdoor, covered deck space. Cooking is done on a BBQ which also has a gas ring for boiling pots. You'll find all the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils you'll need to cook. There is bench space for food preparation and hot water for dishes. A small fridge and a chilly bin is provided for cool food storage. Cupboards are provided for dry food storage.
Mobile phone reception is available for major networks. You'll have options for charging via the solar power at the bach.
A gas and wood-fired 'kiwi hot tub' is provided for the ultimate evening soak. Stoke up the fire and heat up your tub over 2-3 hours - then hop in and ENJOY.
Billy Goat Bach has a campfire area which is a great place to relax with a glass of wine and a bag of marshmallows at the end of the day. It is dependent on the time of year and conditions though, and at certain times of the year will be unavailable due to higher than normal fire risk.
Full linen, towels and bedding is supplied. Feather duvets and wool blankets are provided and beds made up with 100% cotton, high quality linen.
WHAT TO BRING
- Food and drink - make sure you bring all the food and drink you need for your stay.
- Walking shoes or boots for exploring the property.
- Warm clothes - it can be very chilly in the mornings and at night when star-gazing. A warm jersey and long pants are a must.
- Shower and bath toiletries.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen - A must have!
- Towels and togs for swimming in the river.
Billy Goat Bach is on a working farm, so for the safety of all concerned it’s very important to follow the safety guidelines and terms that you’ll find in our booking terms and in your onsite guide. These terms and guidelines include:
- Visitors to Billy Goat Bach stay at their own risk, this is a working farm with hazards both farm related (ie. machinery and animals) and natural.
- Leave gates as you find them
- Animals are unpredicatable - best to avoid them
- Extreme caution driving in and out of the property - driving speed limit on the property is 20km p/h
- Supervise young children carefully. There are specific water hazards for young children on the property - the river for example.
- For your own safety please do not touch any farm machinery, and do not enter the farm buildings on the property.
Billy Goat Bach is 1 hour and 30 mins from Napier and 1 hour and 15 mins from Gisborne. It's a 10km drive to Wairoa.

Eating and Drinking
Billy Goat Bach is self-catering. Just bring your own food, and cook meals using the facilities provided in your covered, outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need. Read more about the kitchen facilities under 'Essentials'.
If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Wairoa is just 10kms away and has several cafes and restaurants to choose from.
A supermarket for stocking up on supplies can also be found at Wairoa.

- Give fly fishing or whitebaiting in the river a go!
- Visit the farm animals - a pet paddock with a pony, pet goats, chooks and sometimes piglets is not far from the bach.
- Enjoy a farm walk and spot the wild animals - wild goats, red deer, fallow deer and loads of beautiful native birds.
- Rest, read, relax and enjoy the scenery and peaceful surrounds.

- Visit beautiful Mahia beach (or pub and golf course), just 40 minutes away.
- Lake Waikaremoana is also 40 minutes drive - amazing bush walks and fishing.
- Bring your clubs! Wairoa Golf course is just 5 minutes drive from Billy Goat Bach.

- For rainy days - the Community Centre in Wairoa has a gym and indoor heated pool.
- The Gaiety Movie Theatre, an older style, classic, cinema in Wairoa has the latest in surround sound and technology... and shows the latest blockbusters.
- Visit Te Reinga falls (20 mins up the Tiniroto road) has amazing water falls.
- Keen fishermen have the option of Ruakuturi River (25mins) a world famous fly fishing river, or Whakamahia Beach in Wairoa town, is a perfect spot for surf casting.
1. Booking and payments
1.1 A deposit of 10% is required to confirm your booking and secure the property. This will be charged to your credit card at the time of booking. A 2.75% credit card payment surcharge will be applied to this payment.
1.2 On receipt of the deposit, you will receive an email confirming both the payment and your booking details.
1.3 The remaining balance will be due 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date. An email reminder will be sent to you 3 days prior to this date, where an outstanding balance remains. The reminder email gives you the option to pay the remaining balance by internet banking or, if your internet banking payment has not been received within 48 hours, the remaining balance will automatically be charged to the credit card used at the time of booking. Please note: a 2.5% credit card payment surcharge is applied to all payments made by credit card. Credit card data is held in a secure and encrypted environment.
1.4 Bookings made within 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date will be charged the full balance at the time of booking (this may be processed in two payments).
1.5 If you are unable to pay the balance before the stated due date, you will forfeit your deposit and your booking will be cancelled.
1.6 Bookings made online within 48 hours of arrival will not be confirmed immediately. Once the campsite has agreed that the booking can be honoured, the guest will be informed by Canopy Camping Escapes and the credit card used for the online booking will be charged the full balance of the stay (note that there is a 2.5% credit card fee).
2. Cancellation and severe weather warnings
2.1 Some campsites may have limitations due to weather. If severe weather is forecast we will call you as soon as possible prior to your scheduled arrival date to advise you and cancel your booking. You can choose whether to defer your holiday to a later date subject to availability or receive a full refund.
2.2 Your 10% deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
2.3 Cancellation by you within 4-21 days of your arrival date will result in 50% of the total cost of your stay being charged. Cancellation within 3 days of your arrival date will result in 100% of the total cost of your stay being charged.
3. Safety and Hazards
3.1 Campsites are often situated on working farms and there are hazards both natural and man-made. You accept that you enter the property at your own risk to participate in a glamping holiday.
3.2 Participation in activities such as, outdoor baths, climbing trees, walking on the property and any other activity on the property is the responsibility of the Guest and is done so at their own risk.
3.3 Canopy Camping Escapes accept no liability for accident, loss of property or personal injury whilst on your stay.
No pets allowed. Campsites are often situated on working farms, and therefore are not suitable for visiting pets.
GST of 15% (where applicable) is included in the daily per night cost. A GST invoice will be supplied if requested.
6. The Holiday – Guest Conditions of occupancy and Conduct
6.1 The Guests have the right to occupy the Property for the paid holiday period only.
6.2 Guests are required to observe the rules and familiarise themselves with the procedures contained in the information folder provided in the tent.
6.3 Guests shall take all reasonable and proper care of the property and its furniture, fittings and effects in or on the property and leave them in the same state of repair, condition, cleanliness and tidiness as at the commencement of the rental period.
6.4 Guests are required to inform the owner of any damage or breakage in or around the property promptly so that it can be repaired and replaced for the next guests. Guests are bound to reimburse the owners for replacement, repair or extra cleaning costs where reasonably demanded by the owners for damage caused by the guests.
6.5 Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.
6.6 Guests undertake to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period. Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner in consulation with Canopy Camping Escapes.
7. Authority to Sign
The person who completes the Booking Form certifies that: he or she is authorised to agree the Booking Conditions on behalf of all persons included in the Booking Form, including those substituted or added at a later date; the signatory is over eighteen years of age; they agree to take responsibility for the party occupying the Property, and to notify Canopy Camping Escapes if they are not a member of the holiday party.
