Tracy and Simon Hayward are the owners and farmers of Highfield Dairy Farm. They will be your hosts during your stay.
Tracy, Simon and their 5 children bought Highfield Farm in 2004. It's a dairy farm, milking 160 cows, and covering 90 hectares of farmland. A further 70 bush covered hectares of the property was put into QEII protection by Tracy and Simon, along with a section of land on either side of the main river that runs through the property. Highfield Forest Retreat is nestled in a part of the QEII protected bush section of the farm.
With the combined effort of Hancocks Forestry, Northern Regional Council and DOC, Tracy and Simon have been trapping pests on their QEII block and up the valley. Through kiwi listening they have established that they now have a moderate population of kiwi - which they look forward to seeing grow annually.
Tracy and Simon want to share their unique and beautiful forest with others, and felt there was no better way than to stay within it. In March 2015 they made their first steps toward their vision with the purchase of a 100+year old kauri hut, then developing the site through the winter to open in December that year.
Their next challenge is to develop a walking track from the campsite to a giant Totara - where a track then follows the river back to the farm.

"We absolutely loved our stay at Highfield forest retreat a few days after our wedding. It was the most beautiful little piece of paradise, and an awesome place to unwind with just the two of us. We will definitely be back someday ☺"
(21 January 2017)
"Me and my partner had the best time staying at Highfield for my 21st birthday. The site was located alongside beautiful farmland which you can explore! The place itself is nicely tucked away in the amazing Kauri Forest with everything you would want. The tent is super cosy the kitchen and lounge are great to relax in too. Other places are also super close by and easy to get to like the Kai Iwi Lakes and Baylys Beach. I would definitely recommend staying here! Thanks so much for having us!!"
(16 January 2016)

"If you're looking for time to relax Highfield Forest Retreat is the place for you. The boardwalk between tent, cabin, shower and toliet was great. The outdoor bath was bliss especially listening to the moreporks in the evening. During the day you can visit Tane Mahuta and the Kai Iwi Lakes."
(5 January 2017)
"If you want a totally peaceful and romantic escape this is for you!"
(3 January 2017)
"Highfield is just such a great experience if you want to be private but still have interesting places to drive to in the nearby area. The forest has an ethereal quality and is great to explore with rivers and small lakes. At night the moreporks call constantly, the kiwis whistle and the possums cough now and again. The nearby fields are great to explore. We were fascinated with the huge mounds of boulders everywhere and tbere is a sizeable river running through which I am sure is swimmable. On top of all that we walked the 4 kms to the local historical pub for a beer and took a drive to the nearby Kai Iwi lakes for a swim. It is advisable to take a warm jumper because it can get chilly under the trees, however, the outside bath warms you up rapidly. Just a great get away."
Penelope Read (28 December 2016)
"Real cute experience to have either with a special someone or with family/friends!"

We spent a precious evening with laughter, card games and candle lights, without any digital entertainment! Thanks to Tracy, Simon, and the kind lady at the local gas station."
Hiroshi, Yuko & Sora (4 November 2016)
"100% recommend, doesn't feel like you're camping at all!"
Jenelle Thomson (2 November 2016)
"We had a great time with no phones or TV, just enjoying some quality time together. To anyone questioning whether it is appropriate for children, we took our three year old and she LOVED getting to sleep in the tent. She had a ball being on a 'venture, and getting to have a bath with fairy lights and candles in the bush just topped it all off! If you want to try something a little bit different then this is totally the place to choose."
Juanita (30 October 2016)

"Highfield was the perfect little getaway from the city. When we pulled up into the driveway in the late afternoon, four big brown bunnies were hopping alongside the car and we knew we were in for a treat. We spent our time enjoying the fresh air, reading, soaking in the outdoor bath, creating cosy meals, listening to the birds and loved every minute of being out here. The tent is spacious and the bed is so comfortable! A great wee trip that I won't be forgetting anytime soon."

Stephanie Pritchett (18 March 2016)
"Highfield Forest Retreat is an exquisite piece of paradise...It's a world away from reality with just enough touches of 5 star comfort and history in its design to make you step back and feel at peace. The natural atmosphere of the forest and the noises of nature insist that you step back from your chaotic world and just "stop" not rush and "do". Relax in the bath in the candle light. Drink your coffee down the drive in the paddock looking out across the hills. Marvell at the history of the buildings and the fridge and cooking over stove. Relax into a bed fit for royalty.....sit under the stars...whats not to like....we'll be back, there is no question about that. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us."
Joanna Brunton (8 March 2016)

The beautiful bush song changed through out the day and the sound of Morepork through the night. Can't wait to re-book."

"If you're thinking of spending two nights here, it won't be enough! The outdoor bath is divine and the little touches added by Tracy and Simon really helped us to relax during our stay! We will definitely be back to this slice of heaven!"

"I'm no camper but I loved this gorgeous place! So serene, private and beautiful. It is located such a short drive from Auckland but feels worlds away with the most stunning places to see close by. So well thought out and special. The gorgeous little outbuildings are so well thought about. Lots of handy things that are so often forgotten about - even in hotels!! Shelving in the shower room to put all of your toiletries etc, hooks for your towels. Wonderful. The hosts are so lovely with Tracey checking in to see if there is anything you need but certainly not intrusive. There was fresh milk, eggs and even home grown cucumber waiting for us! We'll be back!"

"A great opportunity to spend peaceful, quality time with family without the distractions of phones, tablets, and whatever else. And a nice balance for those wanting to camp like me and girls with the "hotel experience" for a city girl like my wife."
