From Auckland (approx 2 hours drive)
- Head North to Whangarei on SH 1. Stay on SH 1 bypassing Whangarei town.
- You will see a turnoff on your right to the Tutukaka Coast, you can also see a golf course on the right there.Take that turnoff and follow the road for about 1km then straight through a small roundabout, another couple of hundred metres straight through the next roundabout.
- You are now leaving a Mobil petrol station on your left and heading out of the eastern suburb of Tikipunga. You will see a big sign directing you towards Tutukaka, Matapouri and Ngunguru. Driving time from there to Ngunguru is approximately 25 minutes.
- This is a lovely drive past orchards and stone walled paddocks. You may want to stock up on fresh fruit at Huanui Orchard a couple of kms down the road on your left.
- The next settlement you will get to is Ngunguru. Drive along the estuary past the shop and over the second one lane bridge. Immediately after the bridge is a turnoff to your left. This is Waiotoi Road. You are almost there!
- You go straight down Waiotoi Road, this will turn into a gravel road after about 1.5km. Continue on the gravel road, passing a one lane bridge, then the road will fork. Stay on the bottom road!
- Continue over another one lane bridge until you come to the end of the Council Maintenance sign and a house with a wooden fence straight head. Our private road leads you up the hill and past that house. You take the second drive on your left, you will see our sign Maunga Iti, continue up the drive to the yellow house and you have arrived.

Stefan and Ira Seitzer will be your hosts while at Maunga Iti. They are a fantastic couple with an interesting background - both personally and professionally.
Stefan, originally from Germany, arrived in New Zealand in 1985 after studying 5 years of classical music. His first job in New Zealand was as a possum trapper where he quickly fell in love with the native bush and environment. After a few years he decided to study Environmental Science, and after graduating set up his own freshwater consultancy. As well as this he's written several articles for the NZ Geographic, set up an outdoor environmental educational programme and eventually decided on a major career change by training as and becoming a teacher.
Stefan bought Maunga Iti in 1995 after seeing the potential of the bush surrounds, stony bottomed stream that ran through the property, and North Island Brown Kiwi in the area. He met the lovely Ira not long after on Ngunguru beach - and the rest was history as they say!
Ira's whakapapa is Ngapuhi, Ngati Kahungungu and Ngati Maru. She's had an equally diverse and interesting career, having had worked in the fitness industry, studied tourism and hospitality, worked with Stefan with their freshwater education programmes and eventually training as a primary school teacher.
They're a passionate, artistic and very personable couple with a great love for and huge amount of knowledge of the Tutukaka area. They look forward to welcoming you to Maunga Iti!

Every night is spent enjoying each other's company and listening to the kiwis calling. Fire going to really set the scene. We had food and massages ordered and they were both spectacular. It's close to so many beaches and tracks to escape during the day too. The hosts are absolutely amazing - so respectful of your privacy and so humble with assisting you throughout your stay. "Ira and Stefan have created a little slice of heaven in Ngunguru. The tent is perfectly positioned to enjoy the view to the ocean . Stefan has created a wonderful bush walk around his property to enjoy the bird life and glorious bush. I was very concerned about getting cold, but the little potbelly fireplace kept us nice and cosy. Ira's food was to die for so I recommend having a dinner or 2 cooked by them. We walked, cycled and played golf so there is lots to do in the area. We would recommend anyone thinking about booking to go ahead and do it. Well worth the trip!"

"My partner and I had an amazing stay at Maunga Iti. It was a beautiful location with peaceful surroundings, perfect for a getaway from the city. Loved falling asleep to the birdcalls in the evening. The camp provided everything and more for a comfortable stay. I can't wait to come back in the summer. Thanks Ira and Stephan, they were such friendly hosts!"

"I booked Maunga Iti for two night on a getaway with my wife for her birthday. Knowing the weather was going to be rubbish I was looking forward to curling up by a warm fire and getting away from technology for a weekend - I was not disappointed! Ira and Stefan were very welcoming and took great care of us. We opted for Ira's dinner on the first night and it was stunning - worth every penny. Our Kiwi listening was fun and helped us understand all the bird calling about the campsite. On the last day we went on one of the bush walks (bring proper shoes!) and it was beautiful and undisturbed, a real kiwi experience. If you're looking for an intimate getaway and like a little outdoors with some luxury then I highly recommend! We're planning on staying again in the summer for a different experience."

"We had a lovely time a Maunga Iti. All though the weather wasn't the best, the site itself was warm, cozy and simply romantic. Definitely a wonderful spot to reconnect with loved ones. Highly recommend! Stephan and Ira are the loveliest hosts. They are unobtrusive and we felt like we were the only ones there in a perfect idyllic getaway."

"We had the best weekend away at Maunga Iti, it has everything you need there for a luxury weekend away set amongst the nature. Stefan and Ira have thought of everything from having the latest magazines to read and enjoy, yoga mats for some sunset yoga to the morning essentials like a coffee plunger. The tent is set up perfectly over looking the coast, a view that is breath taking and amazing to wake up to. The indoor/tent fireplace keeps you warm and cosy at night with the outdoor fire pit a great addition to roast some marshmallows over. You can tell that both Stefan and Ira take pride in their site as it was in great condition. My partner and I will defiantly be back as we really couldn't fault this experience. I would highly recommend a stay at Maunga Iti to anyone, it is an experience to tick of the bucket list."

"We absolutely loved our glamping experience at Maunga Iti. We arrived after dark, the fire had already been lit and the tent was warm and cosy and stocked with everything we would need for the weekend. Maunga Iti is the perfect place to get away from it all and the scenery is simply stunning. Ira's cooking was amazing, we would highly recommend it!We would go back in a heartbeat!"

"We really enjoyed our time at Maunga Iti. We were greeted by our hosts Stefan and Ira when we first arrived. They were both very kind, helpful and accommodating. Before arriving, we were wondering what activities we could do outside of the glamping site, but once we spent some time at the campsite all we wanted to do was enjoy the views and watch the sunrise and set, and keep the campfire going all the hours of the night. We totally recommend it for anyone that just wants to take time out to relax as this has been a really great “mini-retreat” experience for us. We would definitely go back! :)"

"This was a very unique way to experience the beautiful and peaceful bush settings and bird life of the Tutukaka coast. The tent is robustly constructed with a superb bed, cosy potbelly fire, functional kitchen and nice bathroom with H&C water and shower. Especially nice for those who love the great outdoors with a few mod cons thrown in. Thanks to Stefan and Ira who are very friendly and helpful."

"We arrived tired and somewhat strung out due to a demanding year and left relaxed, rested and recharged! We just loved our stay at Maunga Iti - the tent is beautifully appointed with thoughtful attention to detail. It is cosy and stylish and we felt cocooned without being disconnected from the wonderful environment Maunga Iti offers. It was fun to sit and chat around the fireplace and a treat to be lulled to sleep in a luxuriously comfortable bed while listening to moreporks and kiwi calling outside in the nearby bush. The facilities are perfect - excellent camp kitchen and full bathroom all connected to your tent and within easy all-weather access. Our hosts were terrific - helpful, friendly and gave every consideration to our privacy. It was a wonderful short break that we can't rate highly enough. Next time we hope to stay longer and might make it even easier by taking the catered option."
