Shortlands Shed is less than 2 hours from Dunedin and just under 2 1/2 hours from Queenstown.
The shed is set at the base of the Kakanui Ranges, in the Danseys Pass corner of the Maniototo, on a 15,000 acre working high country sheep station. It sits on the edge of a creek overlooking golden tussock hill country.
The design of the shed itself takes inspiration from the classic corrugated iron farm buildings you see throughout New Zealand. It combines a stylish, covered, open-air kitchen and bathroom - with a luxurious and cosy enclosed bedroom and lounging space.
Guests will experience a stunning mountain vista, with 360 degree views of the surrounding high country. A cedar wood-fired hot tub sits in a prime position to take it all in while soaking in steaming hot, fresh mountain water. At night, the view of the night sky and stars is amazing.
During the day, guests are encouraged to explore the surrounds. Climb the mountains - or try gold panning in the creek. If you want to venture off the property, Naseby is 10km away. You'll find cafes and restaurants along with some fun and novel activities. Give 'curling' or ice skating a go - or get the adrenaline pumping with a go on the Southern Hemisphere's only ice luge.

Kissing Gate, Nelson
Kissing Gate is nestled on a 7 acre farmlet, set amongst a glade beside a pond, surrounded by peaceful countryside. Based in the beautiful Mapua district, its just 30 minutes from the centre of Nelson and 16 minutes to Motueka. The campsite is made up of two vintage caravans, Ruby and Pearl, and a settlers' cottage style bathroom and kitchen.
Honeywell Hut, Motueka
Honeywell Hut is just 50 minutes from popular Motueka, and just over 1 hour from Nelson. Set on a large and dramatic sheep and beef farm, Honeywell Hut has all the style of a back country musterer's hut. The one room hut has been loving restored over the years by owners, Fiona and Richard, with a ton of creative, rustic charm.
Camp Kekerengu, Kaikoura Coast

A 10% deposit is charged during the booking process. The deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
Shortlands allows single night stays all year except for weekends, public holidays and the main holiday period between 20 December to 31 January. There is a one night stay surcharge of $30. If you only want one night, please select this option during the booking process.
Rates and Extras
MINIMUM STAY PERIODS
Shortlands has a standard minimum stay period of two nights, but do allow single night midweek stays outside the key holiday period from 1 December to 28 February with a single night surcharge of $30. The minimum booking period for long weekends such as Labour Weekend, Anniversary Weekend etc is 3 nights. The minimum booking period for Easter is 4 nights.
Where there is a single night gap between bookings during the peak period (20 December - 28 February), it may be possible to book that single night with a surcharge of $30. If you are interested in this option, please email us with your date request.
Peak season (1 December to 28 February):
The standard nightly peak rate is $320 for up to 4 people.
Off-Peak season (1 March to 30 November):
The standard nightly off-peak rate is $280 for up to 4 people.
Midweek single night stays are allowed with a single night surcharge of $30.
Note: Shortlands is closed during closed June, July and August.
Otago Rail Trail Pick up and Drop off (including bikes) within Maniototo Region - $60 per group.
HOW TO BOOK AND PAY
The quickest way to check availability and book is by using our online booking calendar. This is always up-to-date. Find the date that suits you, then click Book Now. You'll be taken through the booking process in a few easy steps.
During the booking process, you’ll be asked to pay a 10% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. Once you've completed the booking process and deposit payment, you'll receive a confirmation email. This explains how to pay the remainder of your balance, which is due 4 weeks prior to your arrival date. If you’ve booked within this timeframe, the full balance will be due straight away. We’ll provide bank account details for payment by Internet Banking deposit in the email, and we also provide a secure link so you can opt to pay by credit card. Credit card payments incur a 2.5% surcharge.

Two wheel drive cars can be driven right up to the site and parked just outside the gate for easy coming and going.

SLEEPING & BED ARRANGEMENT
The shed sleeps up to 4 people. Two in the queen bed and two in the fold out slat ottoman. Both the bed and the ottoman are in the same single, large room. There is a portacot available on request. We think Shortlands Shed best suits either a couple, or a family of up to a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children.
Shortlands Shed is completely off-the-grid. Hot water is heated using a gas califont and cooking gas is supplied via LPG gas bottles. Solar power provides lighting and a wood-burning stove provides warmth.
The bathroom facilities include a fully tiled open air bathroom. A monsoon headed shower has part walls for privacy and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. There is a fully flushing toilet.
The kitchen is an outdoor, covered space with a 4 gas-ring hob for cooking. You'll find all the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils you'll need to cook. There is bench space for food preparation and hot water for dishes. A large Chilly bin is inset in the concrete floor and a cupboard is provided for food storage. A portable ice maker is supplied.
Mobile phone reception is available for major networks, roughly 3 bars with 3G. No options for charging.
An alpine wood-fired hot tub is provided for the ultimate 'soak-with-a-view'. Fill the tub with fresh (heated) mountain water, stoke up the fire - then hop in and ENJOY.
Full linen, towels and bedding is supplied. The queen bed has a goose topper, feather duvet and is made up with 100% cotton linen. There are plenty of spare duvets and blankets.
WHAT TO BRING
- Food and drink - make sure you bring all the food and drink you need for your stay.
- Walking shoes or boots for exploring the property.
- Warm clothes - it can be very chilly in the mornings and at night when star-gazing. A warm jersey and long pants are a must.
- Shower and bath toiletries.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen - A must have!
Shortlands Station is a working high country station, so for the safety of all concerned it’s very important to follow the safety guidelines and terms that you’ll find in our booking terms and in your onsite guide. These terms and guidelines include:
- Visitors to the Shortland Station stay at their own risk, this is a working farm with hazards both farm related (ie. machinery and animals) and natural.
- Leave gates as you find them
- Animals are unpredicatable - best to avoid them
- Extreme caution driving in and out of the property - driving speed limit on the property is 20km p/h
- Supervise young children carefully. There are specific water hazards for young children on the property - for example, water troughs and creeks
- For your own safety please do not touch any farm machinery, and do not enter the farm buildings on the property.
Shortlands Shed is 1 hour and 45 mins from Dunedin, just under 2 1/2 hours from Queenstown, and 4 1/2 hours from Christchurch. It is 10kms from Naseby.

Eating and Drinking
Shortlands Shed is self-catering. Just bring your own food, and cook meals using the facilities provided in your covered, outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need. Read more about the kitchen facilities under 'Essentials'.
If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Naseby is just 10kms away and has several cafes and restaurants to choose from.
A supermarket for stocking up on supplies can be found at Ranfurly, 24kms from Shortlands Shed.

- Bring your mountain bike! Naseby is renowned for its mountain biking tracks and Shortlands is only a 20 min drive to the famous Central Otago Rail Trail.
- Try the unique sport of 'curling' - Naseby has an indoor international curling rink for year round curling. Ice skating is also available at certain times of the year.
- Guests in winter can try the luge! Experience the thrills and spills of luge on the Southern Hemisphere's only ice luge track.

1. Booking and payments
1.1 A deposit of 10% is required to confirm your booking and secure the property. This will be charged to your credit card at the time of booking. A 2.75% credit card payment surcharge will be applied to this payment.
1.2 On receipt of the deposit, you will receive an email confirming both the payment and your booking details.
1.3 The remaining balance will be due 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date. An email reminder will be sent to you 3 days prior to this date, where an outstanding balance remains. The reminder email gives you the option to pay the remaining balance by internet banking or, if your internet banking payment has not been received within 48 hours, the remaining balance will automatically be charged to the credit card used at the time of booking. Please note: a 2.5% credit card payment surcharge is applied to all payments made by credit card. Credit card data is held in a secure and encrypted environment.
1.4 Bookings made within 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date will be charged the full balance at the time of booking (this may be processed in two payments).
1.5 If you are unable to pay the balance before the stated due date, you will forfeit your deposit and your booking will be cancelled.
1.6 Bookings made online within 48 hours of arrival will not be confirmed immediately. Once the campsite has agreed that the booking can be honoured, the guest will be informed by Canopy Camping Escapes and the credit card used for the online booking will be charged the full balance of the stay (note that there is a 2.5% credit card fee).
2. Cancellation and severe weather warnings
2.1 Some campsites may have limitations due to weather. If severe weather is forecast we will call you as soon as possible prior to your scheduled arrival date to advise you and cancel your booking. You can choose whether to defer your holiday to a later date subject to availability or receive a full refund.
2.2 Your 10% deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
2.3 Cancellation by you within 4-21 days of your arrival date will result in 50% of the total cost of your stay being charged. Cancellation within 3 days of your arrival date will result in 100% of the total cost of your stay being charged.
3. Safety and Hazards
3.1 Campsites are often situated on working farms and there are hazards both natural and man-made. You accept that you enter the property at your own risk to participate in a glamping holiday.
3.2 Participation in activities such as, outdoor baths, climbing trees, walking on the property and any other activity on the property is the responsibility of the Guest and is done so at their own risk.
3.3 Canopy Camping Escapes accept no liability for accident, loss of property or personal injury whilst on your stay.
No pets allowed. Campsites are often situated on working farms, and therefore are not suitable for visiting pets.
GST of 15% (where applicable) is included in the daily per night cost. A GST invoice will be supplied if requested.
6. The Holiday – Guest Conditions of occupancy and Conduct
6.1 The Guests have the right to occupy the Property for the paid holiday period only.
6.2 Guests are required to observe the rules and familiarise themselves with the procedures contained in the information folder provided in the tent.
6.3 Guests shall take all reasonable and proper care of the property and its furniture, fittings and effects in or on the property and leave them in the same state of repair, condition, cleanliness and tidiness as at the commencement of the rental period.
6.4 Guests are required to inform the owner of any damage or breakage in or around the property promptly so that it can be repaired and replaced for the next guests. Guests are bound to reimburse the owners for replacement, repair or extra cleaning costs where reasonably demanded by the owners for damage caused by the guests.
6.5 Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.
6.6 Guests undertake to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period. Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner in consulation with Canopy Camping Escapes.
7. Authority to Sign
The person who completes the Booking Form certifies that: he or she is authorised to agree the Booking Conditions on behalf of all persons included in the Booking Form, including those substituted or added at a later date; the signatory is over eighteen years of age; they agree to take responsibility for the party occupying the Property, and to notify Canopy Camping Escapes if they are not a member of the holiday party.
