Stock up on supplies at either Colville or Coromandel. Kit and Colin will be your hosts while at Top Hut.
Kit and Colin were introduced to Tuateawa 30 years ago by friends, soon deciding it was where they wanted to live, and moving there for good, 20 years ago. The Top Hut was where they lived happily together for 10 years before moving to a larger home on the property.
Prior to Coromandel and the Top Hut, Colin had been a farmer all his working life, working all over the North Island of New Zealand. His last farm was in Waikato, where he farmed sheep and beef, with his son and family, and then Kit and her daughters. Colin is a real man of the land, a raconteur extraordinaire, reads heaps, and before age slowed him down a bit (he's 83), loved his fishing and outdoor activities.
Kit was born in Holland and emigrated to New Zealand in 1951, living in both Auckland and Wellington. Kit went nursing at the age of 17, until last year, when she finally retired. Kit was a midwife for 18 years, then a practice nurse/district nurse/ambulance officer at Colville Medical Centre, and loved her work. She retired aged 66 and is a keen gardener, loves handcrafts, cooking and domestic pursuits.
They love the Top Hut and feel there has always been a special magic about the place. Over the years they've shared it with family and friends and spent many special times there. Now Kit and Colin are ready to share it with a new group of visitors.

"Top Hut was such a dream getaway, my partner and I enjoyed every minute of it. Not only was the decor and landscape beautiful, but Kit and Colin were so wonderfully accommodating and always making sure we were comfortable. Kit even made fresh cookies gave us extra plum jam which I was very excited about! I live around native bush in my own home, but this was a completely different experience. The wildlife you see around Tuateawa is so rich and exciting, one night we stayed up late watching a Morepork on the deck chasing puriri moths and other bugs that were flying around. Be sure to check out the lookout point as well - you get such beautiful views of the tree tops and the ocean. 100% recommend."

From the hosts, the caramel slice, light lined walkway to the outdoor shower, wet back and fairy light decor this place is perfect for couples wanting to reconnect and get away from it all!! Thanks for having us, we definitely weren't ready to leave!!"

"This is an amazing place to come to if you want to get away from the buzz of the city. Set in the middle of the bush with your own private veiwing deck at the top of the property is breath-taking. Hubby and I were rather sad to leave this little slice of paradise."

"Top Hut is a great weekend getaway, you will never want to leave! It had beautiful views from every angle of the hut and an array of native birds that kept us entertained for hours. There was lots to do, we were never bored. Kit and Colin made sure everything we needed was there and was easy to find and use. I highly recommend Top Hut! Just do it!"

"Top Hut is so wonderful, a hideaway in the forest with views reaching out to the shining Pacific. Private and spacious, more than peaceful - actually serene and magical."

"Not only was the drive lovely as expected, with lunch at Coromadel, but it just got better from there. Top Hut left us cradled by ancient bush, waking in the moon light, taking sun soaked snoozes on the top bed, hiking to the view of views, realising as we sat under the stars we could hear no noise of human kind. It was magical. Can we please keep it a secret? We intend to come back often!"
