Woodpecker Hut is set on a coastal cliff top property on the famous Great Coast Highway, half way between Greymouth and Westport and just a seven minute drive from Punakaiki (site of the 'Pancake Rocks'). Like our little Hexagon, just up the road - it is a great base to explore this stunning region from.
Woodpecker Hut consists of two small, off-grid timber huts, adjoined by a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. One hut is the master bedroom - with a luxurious king size bed. The other is a comfortable lounge hut, with a wood-burning stove and second bed for extras. Built by a local builder and artist, the huts have been crafted right down to the position of the nails. Waney edge weatherboard and native timber lining give the huts a rustic, natural charm. The interior decor is cosy, but contemporary. Soft furs and natural fibres add to the feeling of simple luxury.
The views from every window of the huts are amazing. Facing north toward the ocean, they enjoy all day sun. A cedar hot tub set into the deck at the front of the huts offers the perfect place to wile away a few hours. Soak in steaming hot water and gaze out at the spectacular ocean view.
Designed as the ultimate glamping accommodation - to relax, unwind and unplug - you'll love the chance to just chill out. But if you are looking for something to do - you'll find it! The property itself is 1.5 hectares of regenerating native bush. A short loop walk around the property is great for exploring with the kids - or head down to beautiful Safety or Woodpecker Bay for a swim and a walk on the beach. Find great coffee down the road in Punakaiki, before taking in the natural wonder of the spectacular Pancake Rocks. Fox River (a short 2 minute drive away) has a scenic 2 hour bush walk up the river valley. For the more adventurous, the Old Ghost Trail mountain biking and tramping trail starts 40 minutes away in Westport - or the West Coast Wilderness Trail starts in Greymouth.
Maunga Iti, Tutukaka Coast
Maunga Iti, meaning 'little hills' in Maori, is a large bush block just inland from the stunning Tutukaka coastline. At an easy 2 1/4 hour drive from Auckland, this delectable slice of kiwi paradise makes the perfect escape for weary city folk looking to recharge and relax. Fossickers Hut is situated near small, historic, gold-mining town, Canvastown, on the main route to Nelson from either Picton or Blenhiem. The pioneer-style hut is tucked into native bush, perched on a bluff above the serene Wakamarina River. An old coal range in the lean-to kitchen, and outdoor, fire-heated bath, add to the historic vibe.
Kissing Gate, Nelson
Kissing Gate is nestled on a 7 acre farmlet, set amongst a glade beside a pond, surrounded by peaceful countryside. Based in the beautiful Mapua district, its just 30 minutes from the centre of Nelson and 16 minutes to Motueka. The campsite is made up of two vintage caravans, Ruby and Pearl, and a settlers' cottage style bathroom and kitchen.
Honeywell Hut, Motueka
Honeywell Hut is just 50 minutes from popular Motueka, and just over 1 hour from Nelson. Set on a large and dramatic sheep and beef farm, Honeywell Hut has all the style of a back country musterer's hut. The one room hut has been loving restored over the years by owners, Fiona and Richard, with a ton of creative, rustic charm.

The Hexagon, West Coast
The Hexagon is an off-the-grid rustic hut, originally built by an astrologer over 30 years ago. Lavericks Bay, Banks Peninsula
With the luxury campsite a 15 min walk down to a beautiful secluded beach, glamping at Lavericks Bay in the Banks Peninsula is something pretty special. Enjoy long, warm days swimming and playing in the soft sand on the safe beach. Bring your bikes and explore the farm tracks or take your kayak out for an afternoon... all followed up by a hearty camp cook-up at the end of the day.

A 10% deposit is charged during the booking process. The deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
Woodpecker Hut allows single night stays all year except for weekends, public holidays and the main holiday period between 20 December to 31 January. There is a one night stay surcharge of $30. If you only want one night, please select this option during the booking process.
Rates and Extras
MINIMUM STAY PERIODS
Woodpecker Hut has a standard minimum stay period of two nights, but do allow single night midweek stays outside the key holiday period from 20 December to 31 January (with a surcharge). The minimum booking period for long weekends such as Labour Weekend, Anniversary Weekend and Queens Birthday Weekend etc is 3 nights. The minimum booking period for Easter is 4 nights.
Year Round Rate
The standard nightly rate for a two or more night stay is $260 per night for two people.
Extra people are $10 per child and $30 per adult
Single night surcharge for single night stays outside the main holiday period is $30.
HOW TO BOOK AND PAY
The quickest way to check availability and book is by using our online booking calendar. This is always up-to-date. Find the date that suits you, then click Book Now. You'll be taken through the booking process in a few easy steps.
During the booking process, you’ll be asked to pay a 10% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. Once you've completed the booking process and deposit payment, you'll receive a confirmation email. This explains how to pay the remainder of your balance, which is due 4 weeks prior to your arrival date. If you’ve booked within this timeframe, the full balance will be due straight away. We’ll provide bank account details for payment by Internet Banking deposit in the email, and we also provide a secure link so you can opt to pay by credit card. Credit card payments incur a 2.5% surcharge.

Cars can be driven right up to the door of the huts and parked for easy coming and going.

SLEEPING & BED ARRANGEMENT
Woodpecker Hut consists of two huts, adjoined by a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. There is a master bedroom hut with a king bed and a window seat that can sleep one adult or two small children. The 'lounge' hut has a second mezzanine style queen bed (accessed by a ladder) suitable for a second (adventurous!) couple or children. Note that the mezzanine style bed is ceiling height (2.4m off the floor). It has a railing, but is better to suited to older children. Adults, be aware that you'll need to climb up and down a ladder to get up there! Younger children are best suited to sleep in the bedroom hut on the window seat squabs.
We think Woodpecker Hut best suits either a couple, a small group of friends or a family of up to a maximum 2 adults and 3 children.
Woodpecker Hut is completely off-the-grid. Hot water is heated using a gas califont and cooking gas is supplied via LPG gas bottles. Solar power provides lighting and a wood-burning stove provides warmth.
The bathroom facilities consist of a shower and sink, and a pleasant-to-use composting toilet.
The kitchen is an outdoor, covered space with a gas hob and small barbeque for cooking and a low energy, solar powered fridge provided for cool food storage. There is bench space for food preparation and hot water for dishes.
Mobile phone reception is not available! You're well and truly off the grid here, but mobile phone reception and wifi can be found a short distance away in Punakaiki (8 minute drive).
An alpine wood-fired hot tub is provided for the ultimate 'soak-with-a-view'. Stoke up the fire and heat up your tub over 2-3 hours - then hop in and ENJOY.
Full linen, towels and bedding is supplied. Queen beds are made up with 100% cotton linen. All beds have either wool or feather duvets. There are plenty of spare duvets and blankets.
WHAT TO BRING
- Food and drink - make sure you bring all the food and drink you need for your stay, including tea, coffee, cooking oil etc.
- Walking shoes or boots for exploring the property.
- Togs and towel for swimming down at the beach.
- Warm clothes - it can be very chilly in the mornings and at night when star-gazing. A warm jersey and long pants are a must.
- Shower and bath toiletries.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen - A must have!
The property is a large, bush-clad, cliff-top property, so it’s very important to follow the safety guidelines and terms that you’ll find in our booking terms and in your guide found inside the hut.

Eating and Drinking
Woodpecker Hut is self-catering. Just bring your own food and chilly-bin, and cook meals using the BBQ and facilities provided in your covered, outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.
If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Punakaiki is just an 8 minute drive away and Charleston is approximately 12 minutes away. Both have cafes and restaurants to choose from.
Supermarkets for food shopping can be found in either Westport (40 minute drive) or Greymouth (60 minute drive).

1. Booking and payments
1.1 A deposit of 10% is required to confirm your booking and secure the property. This will be charged to your credit card at the time of booking. A 2.5% credit card payment surcharge will be applied to this payment.
1.2 On receipt of the deposit, you will receive an email confirming both the payment and your booking details.
1.3 The remaining balance will be due 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date. An email reminder will be sent to you 3 days prior to this date, where an outstanding balance remains. The reminder email gives you the option to pay the remaining balance by internet banking or, if your internet banking payment has not been received within 48 hours, the remaining balance will automatically be charged to the credit card used at the time of booking. Please note: a 2.5% credit card payment surcharge is applied to all payments made by credit card. Credit card data is held in a secure and encrypted environment.
1.4 Bookings made within 4 weeks in advance of your arrival date will be charged the full balance at the time of booking (this may be processed in two payments).
1.5 If you are unable to pay the balance before the stated due date, you will forfeit your deposit and your booking will be cancelled.
1.6 Bookings made online within 48 hours of arrival will not be confirmed immediately. Once the campsite has agreed that the booking can be honoured, the guest will be informed by Canopy Camping Escapes and the credit card used for the online booking will be charged the full balance of the stay (note that there is a 2.5% credit card fee).
2. Cancellation and severe weather warnings
2.1 Some campsites may have limitations due to weather. If severe weather is forecast we will call you as soon as possible prior to your scheduled arrival date to advise you and cancel your booking. You can choose whether to defer your holiday to a later date subject to availability or receive a full refund.
2.2 Your 10% deposit is non-refundable, however it can be transferred to another booking made within a 12 month period, if your stay is cancelled more than 3 weeks prior to your arrival.
2.3 Cancellation by you within 4-21 days of your arrival date will result in 50% of the total cost of your stay being charged. Cancellation within 3 days of your arrival date will result in 100% of the total cost of your stay being charged.
3. Safety and Hazards
3.1 Campsites are often situated on working farms and there are hazards both natural and man-made. You accept that you enter the property at your own risk to participate in a glamping holiday.
3.2 Participation in activities such as, outdoor baths, climbing trees, walking on the property and any other activity on the property is the responsibility of the Guest and is done so at their own risk.
3.3 Canopy Camping Escapes accept no liability for accident, loss of property or personal injury whilst on your stay.
No pets allowed. Campsites are often situated on working farms, and therefore are not suitable for visiting pets.
GST of 15% (where applicable) is included in the daily per night cost. A GST invoice will be supplied if requested.
6. The Holiday – Guest Conditions of occupancy and Conduct
6.1 The Guests have the right to occupy the Property for the paid holiday period only.
6.2 Guests are required to observe the rules and familiarise themselves with the procedures contained in the information folder provided in the tent.
6.3 Guests shall take all reasonable and proper care of the property and its furniture, fittings and effects in or on the property and leave them in the same state of repair, condition, cleanliness and tidiness as at the commencement of the rental period.
6.4 Guests are required to inform the owner of any damage or breakage in or around the property promptly so that it can be repaired and replaced for the next guests. Guests are bound to reimburse the owners for replacement, repair or extra cleaning costs where reasonably demanded by the owners for damage caused by the guests.
6.5 Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.
6.6 Guests undertake to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period. Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner in consulation with Canopy Camping Escapes.
7. Authority to Sign
The person who completes the Booking Form certifies that: he or she is authorised to agree the Booking Conditions on behalf of all persons included in the Booking Form, including those substituted or added at a later date; the signatory is over eighteen years of age; they agree to take responsibility for the party occupying the Property, and to notify Canopy Camping Escapes if they are not a member of the holiday party.
