Onawe Hut

Onawe Hut

Banks Peninsula

Onawe Hut is located on Banks Peninsula, just 1 hour and 20-minutes drive from Christchurch City and a 5-minute drive to Akaroa. It's set on the same property as Matagouri Hut.

The site consists of a stylish birch-lined bedroom hut, a bathroom hut and a semi-open-air kitchen - all connected via a boardwalk. An outdoor bath and seating area on the deck of the bedroom hut offers glorious ocean harbour views.

The birch interior and natural linen decor of the bedroom create a restful space to relax. Peeks of greenery through the windows and the ocean view through the glass front doors let the surrounding nature in. You'll see and hear lots of native birds including tui, wood pigeons, and bellbirds in the bush clad hillsides.

Like Matagouri Hut, Onawe Hut is the best of both worlds if you're looking for accommodation on the Banks Peninsula... A beautiful, restful, nature-filled hideaway - but just 5 minutes from the activities, shops and cafes of Akaroa.

  • Eating and Drinking

Onawe Hut is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the gas ring and facilities provided in your semi-outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots, and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Akaroa is just a 5-minute drive away, and you'll have plenty to choose from there. Your host, Harry, recommends trying the Mandala Restaurant and Bully Hayes!

The closest place for supplies is the 4-Square in Akaroa.

  • Things To Do

Onawe Hut is close to the action for people wanting to visit the sights of Akaroa, but at the same time, far away from the hustle and bustle. Your visit can be as action-packed or as relaxing as you choose.

In Akaroa, just 5-minutes drive away, you'll find shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. You'll also find heaps of activities such as kayaking and swimming with dolphins.

Those that wish to just chill-out and enjoy time spent at the hut, can take a short stroll around the immediate surrounds to take in the extensive views and listen to the native bird's sing-song. Enjoy a sunset soak in the outdoor bath followed by a good boardgame. Make sure you bring a good book - and just take the chance to relax.

  • Your Hosts

Your host at Onawe Hut is boat builder and designer, Harry Thurston.

The Thurston family have owned the property on the Banks Peninsula for 32 years, they love that it's so close to Akaroa, but at the same time so tucked away from the hustle and bustle of town and city life.
