Woodpecker Hut

Woodpecker Hut

West Coast, near Punakaiki

Woodpecker Hut is set on a coastal cliff top property on the famous Great Coast Highway, half way between Greymouth and Westport and just a seven minute drive from Punakaiki (site of the 'Pancake Rocks'). Like our little Hexagon, just up the road - it is a great base to explore this stunning region from.

Woodpecker Hut consists of two small, off-grid timber huts, adjoined by a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. One hut is the master bedroom - with a luxurious king size bed. The other is a comfortable lounge hut, with a wood-burning stove and second bed for extras. Built by a local builder and artist, the huts have been crafted right down to the position of the nails. Waney edge weatherboard and native timber lining give the huts a rustic, natural charm. The interior decor is cosy, but contemporary. Soft furs and natural fibres add to the feeling of simple luxury.

The views from every window of the huts are amazing. Facing north toward the ocean, they enjoy all day sun. A cedar hot tub set into the deck at the front of the huts offers the perfect place to wile away a few hours. Soak in steaming hot water and gaze out at the spectacular ocean view.

  • Eating and Drinking

Woodpecker Hut is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the BBQ and facilities provided in your covered, outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, Punakaiki is just an 8 minute drive away and Charleston is approximately 12 minutes away. Both have cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Supermarkets for food shopping can be found in either Westport (40 minute drive) or Greymouth (60 minute drive), so best to stock up before you arrive!

  • Things To Do

Designed as the ultimate glamping accommodation to unplug and relax - you'll appreciate the chance to just chill out. Soak in the hot tub or curl up in front of the fire with a good book.

If you are looking for something to do - you'll find it. The property itself is 1.5 hectares of regenerating native bush. Feel free to explore! Or head down to beautiful Safety or Woodpecker Bay to check out the caves, swim and walk on the beach.

Down the road in Punakaiki, you can take in the natural wonder of the spectacular Pancake Rocks with a short loop walk. Fox River (a short 2 minute drive north of the hut) has a scenic 2 hour bush walk up the river valley and the Pororai River walk (8 minutes drive south) is a 'must do'.

Kayaking, underwater rafting, glow-worm caves and even expert stargazing are all just some of the things to do in the immediate area.

  • Your Hosts

Woodpecker Hut is the first glamping hut, created and owned by us (Liz Henderson and Sonia Minnaar), founders of Canopy Camping Escapes. We found the beautiful land at Fox River, thanks to Jed, a local and the host of The Hexagon, just up the road at Woodpecker Bay.

When we saw the land, we knew it needed something special. Woodpecker Hut started off as a rough sketch on a piece of paper and was gradually bought to life over the course of 2016 by the hard work and dedication of a fantastic team of local West Coast artists and builders. We love the result!

Because we're not local to Fox River, Jed Smith will be your host at Woodpecker Hut. Jed has lived in and around the area most of his life. He's a wealth of knowledge about the region and super-friendly and helpful. He'll be available for any help you need while staying at Woodpecker Hut.
