Ahurewa Eco Retreat

Ahurewa Eco Retreat

Coromandel

Ahurewa Eco Retreat is 2 hour and 40-minute drive from Auckland City, 26 minutes from Coromandel Town and 33 mins from Whitianga.

A stay at Ahurewa is like transporting yourself to a pre-historic landscape. Surrounded by native bush as far as the eye can see, not a single sign of civilisation can be seen. Your only companions are the birds - tui, korimako, kereru, riroriro, Ruru, and Piwakawaka. If you're lucky, you may also hear kiwi calling at night.

The off-grid container cabin is made up of a bedroom, living and kitchen area and bathroom. The decor is bright and cheerful and every comfort has been considered. With plenty of books and board games and even a short bushwalk around the property, there is plenty to make your escape from civilisation an entertaining one.

Ahurewa Eco Retreat is magical. It's a place to stargaze and to rest. It's a place to let the sounds of nature envelop you - and the sunrise over the bush-clad peaks take your breath away.

  • Eating and Drinking

Ahurewa Eco Retreat is self-catering. Just bring your own food and cook meals using the equipment provided in the cabin kitchen. You'll find cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, and utensils.

If you want a break from cooking and feel like a meal out, it's a 26-minute drive to Coromandel where there are a number of cafes and restaurants to choose from. Whitianga, 33-minutes away, also has plenty of eating out places to offer.

The nearest supermarket is in Whitianga and Coromandel has a 4 Square for stocking up on supplies.

  • Things to do

The cabin is completely private and surrounded by native trees and plants. Views of bush-clad peaks change constantly in the mist and light. It's a place to disconnect from the modern world and relax and unwind in nature.

There's a small bushwalk on the property, but if you're keen for more exercise, check out the Waiau Kauri Grove walk on 309 Road, a 4.2km drive away. The Waiau Falls is also on 309 Road, jut a 5km drive from the Mahakirau Gate.

The Coromandel area has a large variety of things to do including beaches to visit and many more amazing walks. Coromandel town has a scenic train journey that comes highly recommended and is renowned for arts, crafts and galleries.

The Lost Spring in Whitianga is a must-visit if you love geothermal pools.

  • Your hosts

Your hosts at Ahurewa Eco Retreat are Rosie, her husband Steve, her daughters Jasmine, Stephanie, and stepchildren Noah, Cassidy, and Eli.

Occupational therapist Rosie bought the land in the Coromandel when she sold her house after moving in with her husband, Steve, a software developer. They wanted something special outside of Auckland that they could eventually retire to later in life.

Initially, they camped on the property in a small caravan and then went to work on building the off-grid container cabin which was finally completed in 2020.

Rosie and her family love the serenity of this incredible spot. The amazing birdlife, sitting on the deck with a morning coffee, soaking up the view, curling up with a good book in the library. They love the mindfulness involved in living off-grid.

Rosie loves the concept of glamping - relaxing amongst nature, in comfort can be such a great treat to buffer against busy lives. She's delighted to offer others the chance to enjoy Ahurewa.

Ahurewa is Maori for "sacred place" and for Rosie, this seemed to fit the feel of this special place and her kaitiakitanga (stewardship) of the land.

Ahurewa Eco Retreat was stunning; it was one of the best trips I have ever had. Everything about the place is special, clean, well-maintained, and set up! There are honestly very few places this special. There is no doubt I will book Ahurewa again in the future. Thank you, Rosie!

Loved everything about this place, it's self-sufficient and feels really private. We were able to completely switch off, which was the goal of the weekend. The views are amazing, and if you like wildlife, this is the place to be.

Wow! Such an amazing off-the-grid hideaway. The weather wasn't great when we stayed, so we stoked the fire, selected a book and chillaxed. I'm sure the views would have been outstanding though!
