Wai Dome O Peak

Waitomo, Waikato

Wai Dome O is 5 minutes from Waitomo township in the Waikato, and just over two hours drive from Auckland. It's just a few minutes away from one of New Zealand’s most iconic natural attractions – the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

On the same property in its own isolated spot, you'll find Wai Dome O Point.

Positioned on the top of a steep hill, the views over the rolling farmland hills and native bush are breathtaking. In the distance, you can see the Ngaroma Hills, Mt Pureora and even the grand Waitomo Caves Hotel.

The Dome is a large geodesic structure with front-row seats to soak up the views over the valley. A comfortable queen-sized bed, a small lounging area and a dining table are located inside. The toilet can be found a few steps outside the dome, while the kitchen and shower areas are located in their own separate buildings a few metres away. All of these structures were built using beautiful Lawson timber from the heart of the farm itself.

During the day, take advantage of all the amazing activities in the region... In the evening, relax. Watch the sky turn shades of pink and purple until the stars begin to sparkle and the moreporks start to call.

  • Your Hosts

Christen and Katie, along with their two young sons and Olaf the sausage dog, are your hosts at Wai Dome O Peak.

The farm has been in Christen's family since the early 1900s. Christen’s father, Peter, was also heavily involved in the caving world and setting up the local museum. Now with the land passed to Christen and Katie’s ownership, they've created a new tourism venture, Wai Dome O Peak and Wai Dome O Point.

Living in a truly stunning part of the country, with backgrounds working in tourism, it was a natural step for Katie and Christen to share what they have for guests to enjoy.

Wai Dome O is a play on the place name 'Waitomo'.

This glamping stay was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. The dome was beautifully set up – peaceful, warm, and surrounded by nature that feels almost surreal. Watching the sunrise over the foggy valley with a hot coffee in hand was a moment of true stillness and healing for me. Katie was an incredible host – kind, responsive, and thoughtful. She helped me light the fireplace on my first night, and I slept so well with the sound of the fire crackling in the background. If you’re feeling burnt out or just need a break from the chaos of city life, this place is the perfect escape. Can’t recommend it enough. I’ll definitely be coming back.

First and foremost, my partner and I loved this place. The views are breathtaking. You can see the rolling green, lush fields for kilometres. (For you LOTR people out there, this place makes you feel like you're right there in the movies.) The scenic dome is very snug and romantic. Katie and Chris have really put effort into ensuring we enjoy the place. Basket full of wood for the fire, fire starters for city dwellers like us, card games, seats at prime real estate to take in the endless green hills and blanket of stars. This place truly is a peaceful, relaxing and private experience. We did happen to get some very polite cows that were happily munching away on their grass right next to us. I personally enjoyed their company for quite some time as I relaxed outside the dome watching the hillside and enjoying the refreshing breeze. For clarity, this is very much a glamping experience. The bathroom, kitchen and shower are completely detached from the dome, all being very well crafted and functional. It has an equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook or make yourself a hot beverage. The toilet is a well-constructed outhouse with lighting, however, it got quite chilly inside. The washbasin and shower are very much outside for you to enjoy the wilderness around you with very reliable hot water. I can't rate this place highly enough and would definitely return in the future. Be mindful of how hot or cold the weather is when you visit as you won't have many ways to manage this here. 5/5 stars.

We had a wonderful experience in the dome. It was a last minute request and Katie was able to fit us in. She was very nice and easy to contact. The dome was magical. The overall look and atmosphere was awesome, very cute and so comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. The toilet was clean and everything was easy to access, even in the middle of the night. Couldn't ask for more. It was our best night of the week. We travelled all around the North Island. It was our last night and the best. Thank you.

We had a beautiful winter getaway as a family with our new baby. The place was incredibly cosy, especially with the wood fire, which warmed the space up quickly. The views were absolutely stunning, and we were lucky to have a clear night to watch the stars from the bath. Pure magic. Communication with Katie was fantastic. She made us feel so welcomed. A solid ten out of ten experience.
