  • eating and drinking

Tussock Rocks is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the oven and four-burner gas hob provided in your kitchen. A BBQ is available on the deck. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you're wanting to eat out, Akaroa is 40 minutes drive with numerous dining options. Enjoy delicious coffee and baked goods at Little River Cafe or The Duvauchelle Hotel, which serves everything from classic fish and chips to hearty lamb shanks and succulent ribs.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is a small store in Little River, 40 minutes away, or New World Haslwell (in Christchurch), an hour away.

  • things to do

Relax, sit back and take in the gorgeous ocean view from the hut, or get out and about to enjoy everything the Banks Peninsula region has to offer.

Inside the hut, you'll find a great selection of board games, jigsaws, DVDs, and CDs (with basic TV and DVD player provided), as well as a telescope and binoculars for bird watching, boat spotting, and stargazing! Need we say more?

The property is also situated next to a 50-hectare QE11 covenanted bush block, one of the very few remaining sites of original bush on the Banks Peninsula. It's home to many native trees (some are a few hundred years old) and native birds, moths and lizards. Guests are welcome to explore the land (more info in your Welcome Guide).

Akaroa is just a short 40-minute drive away, where you can embark on dolphin or wildlife tours, visit the Pōhatu Penguins, or try water activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming. The Okains Bay Museum and  Okains Bay Beach are also must-see attractions.

Fishing is available from the pier in Little Pigeon Bay.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Tussock Rocks are Kirsty, Mike and their daughter Addi.

This haven was lovingly crafted by a local artist who found inspiration in the landscape. Kirsty and Mike, entrusted with this special place, have cherished it as their family retreat for six years.

It’s hard to pick one thing they love the most. Tussock Rocks is home to many threatened plants, birds, and insects, and the couple takes great pride in their role as guardians of this special land for future generations. And let’s not forget the views—the endless skies, ever-changing seas, and stunning sunrises and sunsets are truly a highlight.

Kirsty and Mike are avid travellers with a passion for off-the-beaten-path adventures. They have poured their hearts into creating a space where you and your family can escape in peace and quiet. Aside from being your hosts, Kirsty works in marketing and communications for a New Zealand-based health insurance provider, and Mike is a design manager for a façade manufacturer and installer.

Now, they’re excited to share the magic of this special place with their guests.
