Te Rangi

Te Rangi

Banks Peninsula

Te Rangi is located on Banks Peninsula, 1.5 hours from Christchurch city and 30 minutes from Akaroa.

The self-contained cottage sits on a 5-hectare hillside retreat, offering breathtaking views of Akaroa Harbour and Tuhiraki (Mt Bossu).

Inside features a kitchen, living, and dining space warmed by a crackling woodburner. The thoughtfully placed deck offers a front-row seat to nature's spectacle. The soothing murmur of a nearby stream blends with the melodic chorus of native birds—tui, bellbirds, and kereru—while the vast blue sea stretches toward the horizon.

The outdoor hot tub is situated among the beautiful native bush, right above the bubbling stream. Explore the property's private walking tracks through the pristine bush, or simply unwind and watch the ever-changing light play across the harbour and surrounding hills.

  • things to do

Relax in the secluded wood-fired hot tub, or explore the private bush track that winds through native forest and crosses a stream. Inside the cottage, enjoy the extensive CD collection through the quality stereo system, or challenge your companion to a game of chess, cards, or a 1000-piece puzzle - perfect for rainy days or quiet evenings.

The surrounding area offers plenty of attractions within easy reach. Just 1km down the hill, check out the swimming and fishing areas at Wainui Beach. You can also purchase fresh Akaroa Salmon directly from Wainui Wharf on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Take a scenic drive up Bossu Road to Summit Road, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Southern Bays and Salmon Farm. This route also leads to the township of Little River, where you can explore its great gallery, enjoy a meal at the welcoming Little River Pub (often featuring live music), or relax at the local cafe.

Wine lovers shouldn't miss French Farm Vineyard, where you can sample local wines through their tasting experiences.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Te Rangi are Jen and Steve.

The couple shares their 5-hectare property, called Kahikatea, with their four dogs – Springer Spaniels Fi and Meg, Staghound Blue, and Kelpie Ruby – along with cats Charlie and Kitty Wee.

Jen and Steve's story is one of rediscovered love. Having lost touch in their youth, fate brought them back together three years ago. After discovering and staying at other Canopy Camping escapes on the West Coast, they were inspired to lovingly restore both their home and Te Rangi cottage.

The name Te Rangi was given to the cottage when it was built in 1996, meaning "From the sky" or "Heavenly." It perfectly describes this peaceful retreat, which overlooks the hills and the Akaroa Harbour and Heads.
