Primrose Hill Farm

Primrose Hill Farm

Auckland

Primrose Hill Farm is just 12 minutes from Matakana and 45 minutes north of Auckland City.

Nestled in rolling farmland hills and wildflower meadows, the accommodation offers stunning views of Dome Valley and the surrounding countryside.

The space includes a separate bathroom and kitchen 'shed,' just a few steps from the dome, all encircled by a purpose-built deck. And for ultimate relaxation, an outdoor bath with a view.

Enjoy the melodies of native birds like tūī, kākā, and pīwakawaka, rosella, and the occasional kookaburra. Just beyond the dome, friendly Valais Blacknose sheep and Miniature Highland cows are always eager for a pat.

As the day winds down, don’t miss the magical sunsets. A telescope offers a stunning view of the starry sky, while moreporks serenade you to sleep and the nearby stream gently bubbles away.

  • eating and drinking

Primrose Hill Farm is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the Weber BBQ and a single-burner cooktop provided in your kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

Enjoy the local dining scene with options including Tahi Bar, Aldo's Italian, and Bam Boo Kitchen (Chinese cuisine). Relax at the local pubs with garden bars, grab a casual meal at quality fish and chip shops, or enjoy a coffee and sweet treat at Pete and Mary's Café.

Wine lovers will enjoy Omaha Bay Vineyard, Heron's Flight Vineyard, and Brick Bay Wines & Sculpture Trail. Brick Bay is particularly beautiful as it features a glasshouse restaurant and a 2km garden walk. All are within a 20-minute drive.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is in Warkworth, 5 minutes away.

  • things to do

Unwind with a game of cards or a cosy board game, then sink into the outdoor bath as the evening sky comes alive. Peer through the small telescope and lose yourself in a galaxy of stars. By day, say hello to the super friendly Valais Blacknose sheep and Mini Highland cows. Your host can also guide you through the paddocks for a 30-minute session to feed, pet, and take photos with them (see 'Rates and Extras' for details).

Looking to get out and about for a nature walk? There are so many to pick from, including Kauri Park, Cement Works, Dome ValleyTe Ārai Park or a bliss beach walk at sunset. Another special spot is the Tawharanui Bird Sanctuary.

Matakana Village lies just a 12-minute drive away, with its charming markets and local eateries. The markets run on weekends only: two Saturday markets that run year-round, and a Sunday market during the summer season only.

If you're looking for more to do in Matakana, catch a film at the Boutique Cinema, head to one of the region’s many white sand beaches, or pick your own flowers and herbs at Slow Blooms – followed by a treat at Charlie's Gelato, right next door.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Primrose Hill Farm are Jackie and Hamish.

After relocating from Remuera, they sought peace and quiet, stunning views, and the space to pursue their passions. Hamish makes Puhio Valley Cheese, while Jackie works part-time as a florist.

The name "Primrose Hill" is a nod to Jackie's beloved years in London on Primrose Hill.

Along with their furry companions—an elderly sausage dog, Ginger Rogers, the cat Iris, the Miniature Highlands, Wally and Wee Jimmy, and their numerous Valais Blacknose sheep, each with a name, though too many to list—Jackie and Hamish extend a warm invitation to guests seeking a peaceful and rejuvenating escape.
