Hill Block Hut

Hill Block Hut

Amberley, North Canterbury

Hill Block Hut is situated on the northeast side of Mount Grey on the farm Stormont in the renowned Waipara Gorge Area. It's 15 minutes from Amberley and 50 minutes from Christchurch city.

The off-grid open-plan hut is decorated with beautiful country-luxe style. At the soul of the home sits a Rayburn coal range, ready for preparing hearty country meals, paired with a crackling woodburner that warms the space on the cool Canterbury evenings. There are three bedrooms, two nestled downstairs and one in the loft.

The true magic of Hill Block Hut lies in its breathtaking setting. Perched overlooking 100 acres of native bush, the panoramic views unfold in every direction. To the north is Pyramid Valley, to the east is the Pacific Ocean, and to the south is native bushland. Complemented by the views, allow your worries to fade away while soaking in the wood-fired hot tub.

The renowned Waipara vineyards and scenic Waipara Gorge are just moments away, yet you may find yourself equally drawn to exploring the tranquil bush walks right there on the property.

Trek through 100 acres of Beech forest to the top of the farm for impressive views. Or try downhill mountain biking on the farm track.

  • Your Hosts

Your hosts at Hill Block Hut are Pip and Pete, along with their son, George, and daughter, Susannah.

Pip and Pete have owned the property for over 25 years, initially acquiring it as a supplementary grazing area for livestock breeding. The rustic hut on the land was constructed 22 years ago to serve as a basic agricultural shelter before it was more recently transformed into the warm, stylish and atmospheric accommodation it is today.

This family's hut holds countless memories - their son George spent his teenage years camping, motorbiking, and hunting here, while their daughter Susannah enjoyed horseback riding and stargazing with friends.

When not tending to their Hill Block, Pip is busy with her role as a Property Manager, and Pete works as an Aircraft Engineer for Air New Zealand.
