Tether's End Cabin

Tether's End Cabin

Mangatangi, Waikato

Tether’s End Cabin is located just 1 hour from Auckland and 1 hour 20 minutes from Hamilton.

Set on gently rolling countryside, this peaceful retreat looks out over bush-clad hills, with glimpses of Firth Of Thames in the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel Peninsula in the distance.

Designed for couples, the cabin is a place to slow down and relax. Timber walls and an authentic, rustic charm create a warm, welcoming feeling inside. The open-plan layout connects a well-equipped kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other, with a cosy lounge nestled in the centre.

Both bedrooms feature soft queen beds with lovely linens and feather duvets. Sliding glass doors open onto the scenic deck – perfect for enjoying a glass of bubbles in the fresh country air.

Twin clawfoot bathtubs, along with a BBQ and outdoor dining area, are set on the deck. It’s the perfect place to soak, unwind, and enjoy a meal under the stars.

  • eating and drinking

Tether's End Cabin is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the gas Weber BBQ and two-ring gas stovetop provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans you'll need.

There are several great food and drink options within easy driving distance of the cabin. In Kaiaua, less than 10 minutes away, you’ll find The Bayview Hotel, named one of New Zealand’s top 50 gastropubs. It offers both indoor and outdoor dining, with a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and coastal views. The hotel also provides a shuttle service. Kaiaua also has a popular fish and chip shop called Kaiaua Fisheries, where you can enjoy takeaways by the ocean.

Mercer Landing Kitchen and Bar (25 minutes away) is also on the list of New Zealand’s top 50 gastropubs and is known for its craft beer and wholesome meals.

  • things to do

Soak in the twin outdoor clawfoot baths, relax by the campfire, or curl up inside with a board game or a deck of cards. Take a stroll through the surrounding bush and farmland, or cool off in the nearby freshwater swimming hole (you’ll find more details in your welcome guide). Or simply unwind on the deck with a good book and a glass of wine.

There are plenty of places to explore nearby. Walk the unique shell barrier beaches (known as ‘chenier plains’) at the Kaiaua Seabird Coast, or head to the nearby Mangatangi Dam for a scenic walk and a bit of local history, both about 10 minutes away.

Keen cyclists can enjoy the Hunua Traverse Trail (35 minutes) or the Hauraki Rail Trail (10 minutes), both offering beautiful countryside views. The Pūkorokoro Shorebird Centre is also a great spot to watch thousands of migratory birds swirl over the coastal wetlands (10 minutes).

For a day trip, head to Thames (40 minutes) for markets, museums, and award-winning gin, or venture to the Coromandel Peninsula for long sandy beaches and stunning coastal drives. You’ll also find two local golf courses nearby, along with excellent fishing from the Kaiaua boat ramp.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Tether’s End Cabin are Phillip and Alison Ratcliffe.

They live on the farm with their grown-up sons, beloved dogs Bella and Biscuit, four horses, and a lively collection of animals.

After living and working overseas, Phillip and Alison returned to New Zealand in 2004 to make this special piece of land their home. With over 50 hectares of protected native bush, they’ve created a peaceful retreat to share with others.

When not farming Angus cattle, Phillip works in the energy industry, while Alison is involved in sports management and the local catchment group. Their passion for nature, community, and simple living shines through in every part of Tether’s End Cabin.
