Skylark

Otama Beach, Coromandel

Skylark is just 40 minutes from Coromandel township, 30 minutes from Whitianga and just minutes walk from Otama Beach. On the same property is Blackjack Cabin.

Perched on a hillside above the sand dunes and native bush, Skylark overlooks shimmering views of the ocean.

The modest cabin is styled with soft natural textures and warm details. A compact, well-equipped kitchen and cosy lounge space with a fire invite you to relax. The bedroom opens directly to the view, so you can wake each morning to the sight of the sea.

Life slows down outdoors. Sink into the freestanding bath, refresh in the open-air shower after a swim in the ocean, or gather around the firepit for marshmallows and conversation under the stars.

Skylark is a place to switch off and enjoy a beachside escape.

  • eating and drinking

Skylark is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the four gas rings, small grill, oven and Weber BBQ provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you’d prefer to dine out, Lukes Kitchen in Kūaotunu is a local favourite, serving fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas, and local beers with stunning views. In Whitianga, Grace O'Malley's Irish Inn offers hearty meals, a cosy outdoor fireplace, a sunny alfresco deck, and warm, friendly service.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is the Kūaotunu Store, 7 minutes away.

  • things to do

With the beach just a one minute stroll down the road, it’s the perfect place for safe swimming, long walks, or simply relaxing on the white sand. Pack a picnic or enjoy beach games. You may even spot a dolphin swimming by!

When you’re back at Skylark, soak in the outdoor bath, gather around the outdoor fire, or enjoy a game of cards.

If you’d like to venture further, you could spend an evening at Stargazers Kūaotunu for an unforgettable night-sky experience, or take a Glass Bottom Boat tour in Whitianga to discover the world beneath the waves. For something more relaxing, unwind in the mineral pools at The Lost Spring.

Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own natural spa pool in the sand, and Cathedral Cove, famed as one of New Zealand’s most iconic coastal walks, are both just a short trip away.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Skylark are Claire and Dean.

The property has been in Dean’s family for generations, and Claire has shared life here with him since 1992. Together, they treasure the beauty of the rolling hills and the nearby beach, the sense of remoteness and privacy, and the magic of the night sky with the moonlight reflecting on the water.

It was a neighbour who introduced them to Canopy Camping Escapes, suggesting it would be the perfect way to bring new life into the farm’s unused cabins – including BlackJack Cabin. And they were right!
