Highview

Highview

Waverley, Taranaki

Highview is less than an hour from Whanganui and about 1 hour 45 minutes from New Plymouth and Palmerston North.

Perched on a northwest-facing ridge with sweeping 180-degree views, Highview is your off-grid sanctuary overlooking 300 hectares of native bush, manuka plantation, and rolling farmland. On clear days, you'll catch glimpses of Mount Taranaki and the distant west coast ocean.

The self-contained cabin features a king-sized bedroom opening onto the deck, a kitchenette, a modern bathroom, and a cosy wood burner to keep you warm.

Spend your days spotting red and fallow deer roaming the bush basin below and enjoying a hot cuppa at the bar leaner with Mt Taranaki as your backdrop. Your evenings are for watching spectacular sunsets from the spacious deck, and your nights are for soaking in the wood-fired hot tub or lounging on the beanbags under a canopy of stars. Listen for moreporks calling through the native bush, and if you're lucky, you might even hear kiwis! During autumn, the stags' roar echoes across the valley – a truly wild experience.

  • Eating and Drinking

Highview is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the 2-burner gas hob and Weber Baby Q BBQ provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you fancy a break from cooking, head to Waverley where you'll find Hind Quarters Cafe for a sit-down meal, or grab fish and chips from Waverley Fish Supply. The Four Square also has a great range of snacks and ready-made meals for an easy dinner.

The nearest store is a well-stocked Four Square in Waverley, just 16 minutes away. If you'd prefer to stock up before arrival, larger supermarkets are available in both Whanganui and Hawera (both around 50 minutes away).

  • Things to do

Unwind in the wood-fired oval hot tub under the stars, challenge each other to board games, or lose yourself in a good book. Sometimes the best activity is simply doing nothing at all.

Explore the marked walking tracks across the farmland, including a scenic 2.5km loop with sweeping views over the landscape.

Golfers will love Waverley Golf Club, rated 10th best in New Zealand by renowned architect Tom Doak. Cyclists can tackle the challenging 35km "Kohi Loop" road track (with a 300m climb!)

The nearby black sand beaches are perfect for coastal exploration – visit Waverley's Cave or Long Beach, or Waiinu Beach at Waitotara for rock formations, coastal walks, fishing and swimming.

  • Your hosts

Your hosts at Highview Cabin are Willie, Sarah, Chloe and Blake.

Willie and Sarah are 4th-generation dairy, beef, and sheep farmers in the Kohi area. They purchased "Highview" in 2013 as a dairy support farm. In 2019, they planted over 100 hectares of Manuka Plantation for honey production and erosion control. Today, they farm beef cows on the hill country beside native bush and Manuka.

The family loves the diversity their properties bring to farm life - from milking Holstein Friesian cows to exploring steep hill country on horseback or motorbikes. Willie discovered this site during a hunting adventure and thought it would be perfect for sharing the farm and mountain views with others.
