Ataahua Ruru

Ohope, Bay of Plenty

Ataahua Ruru is a serene escape nestled a short 10-minute drive from Ohope Beach and 20 minutes from Whakatane. This hidden gem shares the same enchanting harbour-side property as Barnie the Glamping Barn.

The luxurious canvas tent is set on a tranquil 14-acre haven, adorned with lush bush cover and embraced by Ohiwa harbour. Thoughtful furnishing and a cosy wood burner bring all the comforts of home, ensuring you stay warm through the winter months. The warm fireplace adds a romantic ambience, perfect for couples looking to relax and reconnect. The glass sliding doors provide uninterrupted panoramas of Ohiwa Harbour and Ohope Spit right from the comfort of your bed. Watch the ebb and flow of tides, all while warmly nestled inside.

Two charming outbuildings, a well-equipped kitchenette and bathroom, set directly behind the tent are connected by a deck with a private outdoor bath.

This lush, organic sanctuary is a haven for native birds. Each evening, you'll be serenaded by the soothing melodies of the Ruru, and every morning, you'll awaken to the symphony of birdsong—a harmonious start to your day.

When night falls, the starry tapestry above is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The harmony of birdlife, the tranquillity that envelops this place, and the way nature's elements seamlessly blend—water, land, and fresh air—transform this into pure bliss.

  • Eating and Drinking

Your camp kitchen has everything you need for self-catering, including a full-sized fridge. Just bring your own food, and prepare meals in the kitchenette. There is a gas element for cooking and you'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking, Ohope is just a 12km drive and Whakatane is just a 19km drive - and both have a selection of fantastic cafes and restaurants. For something special, treat yourself to Aleisha's, Berry Nice Cheesecake, which you can order during the online booking process.

If you need to pop out for supplies, you'll find supermarkets in Whakatane and a 4-Square in Ohope.

  • Things to do

You'll find plenty to keep you entertained at Ataahua Ruru!

Enjoy an evening soak in a hot bath under the stars. Take a walk around the property and adjoining harbour and enjoy the abundant birdlife. Two kayaks are provided so you can enjoy the water right on your doorstep.

There are plenty of board games provided, as well as petanque - a great game to enjoy at the end of the day with a glass of wine. You'll also find a selection of books if you just feel like lazing the day away with a good read. A Wonderboom Bluetooth speaker is provided for enjoying your favourite tunes.

If you're keen to get active and explore the region, enjoy a swim or surf at Ohope or Ohiwa Beach (both just 10 minutes away). If you're into biking, bring the bikes and ride the popular Motu Bike Trail near Opotiki, 20 minutes away. There are lots of beautiful bush walks to enjoy in the surrounding area too.

  • Your Hosts

Tony, Aleisha, and Sky are your hosts at the beautiful Ataahua Ruru. Their journey started here after a road trip led them to this 14-acre paradise.

The Glamping tent is named Ataahua Ruru after discovering a baby Ruru nestled within a tree near Lover’s Lane, a renowned proposal spot. In Maori Ataahua represents the word beautiful and Ruru is known as Morepork.

Ataahua Ruru graces the borders of Ohiwa Harbour, stretching across 14 acres of organic bliss adorned with native trees and abundant bird life.

This off-grid haven invites you to reconnect with nature and tranquillity. Your hosts await your arrival and warm-heartedly welcome you to this enchanting seaside retreat.
