Evergreen Yurt

Kaeo, Northland

Evergreen Yurt is set in the Far North, just under 4 hours from Auckland and 30 minutes from Kerikeri.

A scenic 10-minute ride in a Cam-Am Defender farm buggy will transport you to Evergreen Yurt - hidden deep within native bushland. Perched on a hilltop, enveloped by ancient trees, the yurt looks out to rolling hills and the silhouette of Taratara Rock, a sacred Māori landmark.

The yurt has a beautiful high ceiling and a skylight that welcomes the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest. The tall, wide windows frame breathtaking views of the outside world.

Just a few steps away is a cabin with two separate rooms for the kitchen and bathroom. Bridging the two spaces together is a spacious deck adorned with an outdoor bath, perfectly positioned for front-row views of morning mist drifting through the hills. Towering Totara and graceful Puriri trees provide natural shade, while birdsong offers a tranquil musical backdrop. With no light pollution, the night sky here is incredible.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Evergreen Yurt are Mathias and Robin, along with their rescue dog, Lucy.

Ten years ago, Mathias, from Germany, and Robin, from the United States, made New Zealand their home. After meeting in Wellington, they shared a dream of leaving the bustling city for countryside peace. In 2021, they made that dream a reality by moving to Kaeo and establishing Evergreen Reserve—a place for guests to escape into nature.

Evergreen Reserve’s mission reflects Mathias and Robin’s dedication to conserving New Zealand’s native bush, protecting the Kiwi bird population, enhancing biodiversity, controlling pests, and offering a warm B&B experience for guests to reconnect with nature. Hosting WWOOFers from around the world adds fresh energy and stories to their sanctuary.

The couple enjoys taking joy in nurturing native plants and planting trees, supported by a community of neighbours who share their love for the land.

With years of hospitality experience worldwide, Mathias brings a passion for hosting, ensuring every guest feels at home. Their glamping inspiration came from a memorable 2018 stay at another Canopy Camping escape.

As soon as we arrived, our host Mathias made us feel so welcome. We loved the buggy journey to the amazing Evergreen Yurt, hearing how this incredible venture began. Immersed in the outdoor bath while soaking up the breathtaking sunset views and majestic starlit nights was a definite highlight. Hearing the ruru and kiwi at night was a bonus too. The accommodation was super clean, comfortable and intimate. We look forward to returning again.

My wife and I had an amazing four nights at the Evergreen Yurt. It ended up raining most of the time, however the yurt was super cosy with the fireplace and we were very comfortable. A perfect opportunity to read, play lots of card and board games, and truly relax on the top of a hill in a beautiful surrounding. The outdoor bath is also a real highlight. The host was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We even got to plant a native tree on the property on our final morning. We had such a lovely time. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

Stunning escape up north in the hills. Beautifully executed and with the most lovely host who took the time to tell us stories and show us round the property. The outdoor bath, birds chirping, firepit, clear skies and stars, just so relaxing. I will most certainly return. Thank you.

This is, by far, one of the most restful and peaceful venues we have had the privilege of staying at. An extreme amount of thought has gone into every detail at Evergreen Yurt, from the drive up to the yurt to all the amenities and the pristine facilities. Cannot highly recommend this place enough for people wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and to bask in pure nature and tranquillity.

I can't speak highly enough of Evergreen Yurt. The attention to detail that went into a space that is so secluded in the bush is just outstanding. The hosts were absolutely amazing to deal with, so lovely and caring. The three days I spent here were very healing and exactly what I needed. If you are needing some time to relax with no screens and just nature, then this is it.

We have stayed at several Canopy Camping escapes now and each one has been fantastic, but we have to admit this facility in particular was absolutely incredible! The property, the privacy, the views, and the amenities were top tier. The host, Mathias, was also incredibly friendly and informative, plus his journey (so far) and goals with this property are inspiring, to say the least. Everything was meticulously kept, arranged, and thought out – it might be because the host is German, but my OCD felt at no point threatened while staying at this amazing place. We would recommend anyone wanting their first glamping experience to consider this particular accommodation. Thank you, and we’ll see you next time!

We absolutely loved staying at the Evergreen Yurt. The location, story behind the yurt, and the views all made the experience unique and amazing. It was a pleasure to talk to our hosts and hear their passion for NZ conservation and the part they're playing. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!
