The Hūnua Retreat

The Hūnua Retreat

Hūnua, Auckland

The Hūnua Retreat is just 10 minutes from Hūnua and 45 minutes south of Auckland city.

Once an old stables turned woodshed, this space has now been transformed into a cosy cabin for couples.

Nestled in a quiet glade and surrounded by native trees, the cabin looks out over a still, glassy pond that reflects the lush greenery beyond. The only sounds you'll hear are the gentle flow of water, distant waterfalls, and the calls of the tūī, piwakawaka, kererū, and ducks.

Inside, a plush bed faces wide sliding glass doors, perfectly positioned to take in the view. You can let the fresh air drift in or keep warm by the woodburner on cooler evenings. A TV and WiFi are available for laid-back movie nights.

Step out onto the deck, where a BBQ and soft lights that create a warm glow, especially beautiful as you soak in the outdoor bath under the night sky.

Take a refreshing loop walk around the pond, or head just a 5 minute drive down the road to explore the Hūnua Ranges and popular suspension bridge trail.

  • eating and drinking

The Hūnua Retreat is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the induction cooktop with two elements and Weber gas BBQ provided in your kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

Need a break from cooking? Your hosts recommend John Hill Estate Winery (a relaxed friendly restaurant with lovely views for lunch or dinner). For something a little more fancy, try the award-winning restaurant at Bracu Estate.  Both these spots are about 12 minute's drive.

More of a brunch person? Farm House Cafe is worth the visit. As is the Hūnua Falls Cafe.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and basic supplies is in Hūnua, just 10 minutes away. For bigger supermarkets, you can head south to Pokeno (25 minutes) or north to Takanini (30 minutes).

  • things to do

Step outside for a walk around the pond, soak in the outdoor bath, or relax in the hammock. Inside, cosy up with board games, cards, or a movie on the PS4 from bed (while still enjoying the view!) There’s even giant Jenga for a bit of fun.

The Suspension Bridge Loop Walk is just 5 minutes down the road - a scenic, easy hike with a suspension bridge, reservoir views, and picnic spots.

The Hūnua Falls walking track is 15 mins away and well worth exploring. The trail winds from the Wairoa River through lush native forest, follows a shady stream, and leads to a lookout platform with stunning views of the falls from every angle. Just don’t forget your walking shoes!

  • your hosts

Your hosts at The Hūnua Retreat are Samantha, Scott and Murphy the dog.

Sam and Scott have called this beautiful countryside property home for the past few years, having moved from the city to create a dream backyard for their beloved dog, Nala.

Inspired by their travels around New Zealand and visits to various glamping spots, they transformed an old woodshed (once part of the property's stables) into the cosy cabin guests enjoy today. The couple especially love the region for its local bush walks, warm community, and the seasonal cherry blossoms.

Their retreat is a space designed to share the things they love most—nature, animals, and time to slow down – with friends, family, and visitors alike.
