10 of the Best Glamping Escapes in the Waikato Region

17 July 2026 - 12 minute read time

The Waikato is one of New Zealand's most underrated regions for a getaway. Rolling green farmland, dramatic volcanic peaks, the famous Waitomo Caves, world-class surf at Raglan, Lake Taupō, and the Hobbiton™ Movie Set — all within easy reach of Hamilton and a short drive from Auckland.

We have some genuinely exceptional glamping escapes across the region, from earth houses and geodesic domes to converted cowsheds and lakeside huts. Here are ten of our favourites.

1. Underhill Valley: Whatawhata, Waikato

View Underhill Valley →

Why we love it: A one-of-a-kind earth house handcrafted over 15 years into a rolling Waikato hillside, with curved ironwork, native timbers, and warm candlelight — unlike anything else in New Zealand.

Built directly into the hillside of Whatawhata, Underhill Valley is one of the most extraordinary places to stay in the Waikato. Handcrafted over 15 years using rustic native timbers and intricate ironwork, this earth house has curved walls, warm lighting, and handcrafted details in every corner that create an atmosphere both intimate and completely transportive.

Huge timber doors open wide to overlook a picturesque pond and farmland beyond. The old coal range, candlelight, and a glass of wine by the pond under the stars make for an evening that feels genuinely removed from the modern world. The Hobbiton™ Movie Set is just 45 minutes away in Matamata.

As one guest put it: "What an amazing and magic place. Our stay was well and truly memorable."

From NZ$440/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 20 mins from Hamilton, 45 mins from Hobbiton™

2. Venus: Raglan, Waikato

View Venus →

Why we love it: A stunning geodesic dome on a Raglan hilltop with a cedar barrel sauna, outdoor bathtub, valley views that go on forever, and Raglan's legendary surf breaks just 10 minutes away.

Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views over rolling farmland, Venus is one of the most visually striking escapes in our Waikato collection. Wake up as sunlight streams through picture-frame windows, drift off to birdsong, and spend your evenings soaking in the freestanding outdoor bathtub or unwinding in the cedar barrel sauna.

Inside, warm wooden floors and brass accents create a beautifully considered space, with a queen bed dressed in a wool duvet and a kitchenette tucked behind a botanical mural. Hosts Nadine and Jeff have poured real love into this property, and guests feel it the moment they arrive.

Why we love it: Two beautifully appointed huts perched high on a tree-clad hillside with Lake Taupō views, an outdoor bath under the stars, mountain biking and climbing on the doorstep, and dogs and children welcome.

Set high on a hillside 25 minutes from Taupō, Totara Perch is one of those escapes that guests come back to again and again. Two cosy huts sit privately among mighty Kamahi, Rewarewa, and Ti Koura trees, with views stretching across native bush to Whangamata Bay on Lake Taupō. Kererū drift through the valley in the evenings, fantails dance around during the day, and moreporks call out as you soak in the outdoor bath beneath the stars.

Bikes can be ridden directly from the property to Kawakawa Bay, and there are mountain biking loops of 16km to 32km accessed from the farm. A ten-minute walk leads to Old Codgers Rock, ranked one of Taupō's top photo locations. Dogs and children are both welcome.

As one guest said: "We've done quite a few Canopy Camping escapes and this is our favourite. The views, the setting, the stay, the location — everything to love, nothing to hate."

7. Lovebird Cottage: Raglan, Waikato

View Lovebird Cottage →

Why we love it: A fairy-tale pocket of bush with a natural limestone staircase down to an outdoor bath by the Parawai Stream, one of the few escapes near Raglan that welcomes dogs.

Tucked into an orchard overlooking the Parawai Stream on the same farm as Venus and Luna, Lovebird Cottage has its own completely distinct character. It's quieter, more sheltered, and feels like stumbling into a fairy-tale pocket of bush. From the covered porch, a natural limestone staircase winds through the trees to a beautiful outdoor bush bath.

Guests describe it as "dreamy," "a fairy forest," and "blissful." A small shaded deck under a Kahikatea tree is perfect for an evening drink by the stream. Unlike Venus and Luna on the same property, Lovebird Cottage welcomes dogs, making it one of the few dog friendly glamping options near Raglan.
