If you're searching for accommodation in Taupō with a proper lake view, you've landed in the right place. Tucked into the hills and farmland around Lake Taupō, most just 10 to 25 minutes from town, seven of our most-loved escapes offer outdoor baths, hot tubs, birdsong and some of the best sunsets on the North Island.
Why Stay Near Lake Taupō?
Taupō has always been the North Island's adventure playground: lake swims, mountain bike trails, geothermal hot pools and the Great Lake Trails on the doorstep. But the best part of staying out of town is coming home to a hillside, a view and a bath or hot tub with a front row seat. Whether you're after a couples escape, an anniversary, or a family weekend with the dog in tow, there's something here for you.

Lochview: A Lakeview Glamping Tent with a Wood-Fired Hot Tub for the Family
Why we love it: A spacious, fully powered tent with a wood-fired hot tub, a separate kids' bedroom and lake views that make sunset the main event.
Lochview is just 15 minutes from Taupō, and the Kinloch Store is only 3 minutes away for wood-fired pizza and groceries. The tent has an open-plan kitchen, lounge and queen bed, plus a separate bedroom with two single beds for the kids and an internal bathroom with a flushing toilet. A heat pump keeps it cosy in winter, and there's an outdoor brazier for s'mores after dinner.
The wood-fired hot tub is the star, and guests rave about it. One said, "The stars sitting out in the hot tub at night were unreal." Lochview suits couples, groups of friends and families with children aged 5 and over. It does have a no-dog policy.
From NZ$395/pn | Sleeps 4 | Children aged 5+ welcome | 15 mins from Taupō

Te Tuhi Hut: A Couples Retreat with a Bath on Wheels (Dogs Welcome!)
Why we love it: A hillside hut with lake views from the bed, a special bath on wheels you can move indoors or out under the stars, and dogs welcome.
On the same hillside property as the Dome, Te Tuhi Hut is a tranquil retreat for two. A queen bed with stunning views sits on one side, a semi-open-air bathroom on the other, and a sheltered outdoor kitchen and lounge in between with a pot belly stove for cooler evenings. The bath on wheels can be pushed out onto the deck for a soak under the stars, which makes it a perfect proposal weekend or anniversary escape.
Look out for the hints of pottery around the property. Host Emily creates small batch pieces in her studio and welcomes guests by appointment. One guest wrote, "For anyone wanting a romantic getaway where you can take your dog this is the place for you!"
From NZ$320/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | Dogs welcome | 15 mins from Taupō

Totara Perch: Lake Views, an Outdoor Bath and Room for the Whole Family (Dogs Welcome!)
Why we love it: Two huts high on a tree-clad hillside with Whangamata Bay views, a huge outdoor bath for stargazing, and children and dogs both welcome.
Set high on a hill 25 minutes from Taupō and 10 minutes from Kinloch, Totara Perch looks out across native bush to the lake beyond. Two beautifully appointed huts sit just metres apart, one with a king bed and a set of built-in bunks for the kids, the other a cosy living hut with a wood burner. Kererū make their way up the valley in the evening, fantails dance all day, and moreporks call while you soak in the outdoor bath under the stars.
It's one of the most family-friendly escapes near Taupō, with farm animals to visit (especially Bruno the black sheep), mountain bike loops straight from the property, and a short walk to Old Codgers Rock, one of Taupō's top photo spots. It's fully off-grid, so bring a power bank for the phones. As one guest put it: "We've done quite a few Canopy Camping escapes and this is our favourite."
From NZ$330/pn | Sleeps 4 | Children and dogs welcome | 25 mins from Taupō, 10 mins from Kinloch

Te Tuhi Dome: A Geodesic Dome with Lake Views and a Luxurious Outdoor Bath
Why we love it: A geodesic dome on a hillside 15 minutes from Taupō, with lake views from every corner, a wood burner for cosy nights, and dogs welcome.
Te Tuhi Dome is a romantic escape for couples who want the lake on their doorstep without giving up privacy. The dome holds a gorgeous bedroom and lounging space, with a kitchen building on one side and a luxurious outdoor bathroom on the other. Lambs and calves frolic in the paddocks in season, and the bush comes alive with birdsong at dawn and dusk.
It's a beautiful choice for an anniversary or a mini honeymoon, and guests have said it had "everything to make our anniversary perfect." Dogs are welcome too, so the whole couple (four legs included) can come along. Hosts Emily and Joe live on the property and are warm without ever being in your way.

Telephone Exchange: A Restored 1950s Hut on a Working Farm (Dogs Welcome!)
Why we love it: A rescued 1950s telephone exchange turned off-grid retreat, with a cute wood burner, a stunning outdoor bath, farm animals grazing nearby, and dogs welcome.
Set on Wolfhaar Farm, 25 minutes north of Taupō, the Telephone Exchange was once a 1950s telephone exchange building. It has been rescued, restored and moved to a spot beneath a stand of eucalypts, where it now makes one of the most charming and characterful stays around Taupō. A romantic, spacious bedroom hut sits beside a matching kitchen and bathroom hut, and the whole place has a slower, simpler feel.
Sip a drink, watch the rosellas and kingfishers swoop through the trees, and let the farm animals graze lazily while you soak in the outdoor bath. It's a lovely anniversary or birthday escape, or the perfect place to stop and take a breath on a North Island road trip. As one guest said: "Felt so relaxing and worlds away but with great facilities."
From NZ$250/pn | Sleeps 2 | Dogs welcome | 25 mins north of Taupō

Treetops: A Tiny House Above Acacia Bay with a Hot Tub and Lake Views
Why we love it: The "tiny house of fantails" with sweeping lake and Kaimanawa Range views, an outdoor hot tub, and a hammock and fire pit for slow evenings.
Just 10 minutes from central Taupō, Treetops feels a world away. The 30 square metre tiny house has been cleverly designed with adjoining living spaces and an expansive deck. The raised seating space faces east for views across Lake Taupō to the Kaimanawa Ranges, and the queen bedroom opens straight onto the deck, ideal for a hot tea in the crisp morning air.
Slide the big glass doors open for an alfresco shower, then soak in the outdoor hot tub as the twilight settles. It's a lovely pick for a birthday or anniversary weekend, and the dawn chorus of fantails, tūī, kererū and bellbirds is the best alarm clock going. As one guest said, "The hot tub was superb, we saw so many stars and the Milky Way."

Kānuka Heights: A Hillside Cabin with a Fireplace and an Outdoor Bath
Why we love it: A cabin among native kānuka with lake views across to Ōmori and Kuratau, an indulgent outdoor bath, and a boutique sauna and cold plunge just minutes away.
Kānuka Heights sits on the quieter side of the lake, about an hour from central Taupō, which makes it the one to choose when you really want to get away. The cabin has an open-plan bedroom and lounge with a cosy fireplace, a semi-outdoor cooking space and bathroom next door, and lake views framing every room.
Lose track of time in the outdoor bath, make s'mores by the fire pit, or let the afternoon drift by over cards on the sun-drenched deck. Aio Sauna, a boutique sauna and cold plunge above the lake, is just minutes away, which makes this a standout for a honeymoon, babymoon or wellness anniversary. As one guest wrote, "Kanuka Heights has incredible views of Lake Taupo framed by the kanukas."

Things to Do Near Lake Taupō
Beyond the escapes themselves, Taupō rewards a bit of wandering. Whakaipo Bay is a favourite for a swim or a walk along the beach, and the W2K track and the Great Lake Trails suit walkers and mountain bikers alike. The Craters Mountain Bike Park and its Hub Cafe are around 20 minutes from Totara Perch.
In the evening, soak in the adults-only Wairakei Terraces pools, or spend a lazy lunch at the Huka Prawn Park on the edge of the Waikato River. Kinloch has a world-class golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus with a course-side cafe open to everyone, and a kayak or boat trip to the Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay is a must. For geothermal wonders, Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park is only a short drive away.
Getting to Taupō: Road Trip Tips
Taupō is about 3.5 hours from Auckland and roughly 1.5 hours from Hamilton, so it works well for a long weekend. Most of these escapes are self-catering, so stock up at the supermarkets in Taupō or the Kinloch Store before you head up the hill.
Best time to visit: Taupō is a year-round destination. Summer brings lake swims, long evenings and boating, while winter is made for wood burners and soaking under crisp, starry skies. If you're booking in winter, pack plenty of warm layers, as the Central Plateau gets cold and several of these stays have semi-outdoor kitchens and bathrooms.
