Hobbit Hole Accommodation in New Zealand: Two Earth House Escapes You Can Actually Stay In

3 July 2026 - 7 minute read time

New Zealand is the home of Hobbiton™. The rolling green hills, native bush, and patchwork farmland of the North Island provided the backdrop for some of the most iconic scenes in cinema history, and for many visitors, a trip to the Hobbiton™ Movie Set in Matamata is a bucket-list moment.

But what if you could actually sleep in something that feels like it belongs in that world?

We have two extraordinary earth house escapes in our collection that do exactly that. Handcrafted with curved walls, round doors, native timbers, and earthy textures, Heartwood Hollow and Underhill Valley aren't themed accommodation — they're genuinely crafted places that happen to evoke exactly the kind of magical, grounded, unhurried world that made Hobbiton™ so captivating in the first place.

Heartwood Hollow: Tauranga, Bay of Plenty

View Heartwood Hollow →

Why we love it: A handcrafted earth house tucked into native bush with a circular doorway, hand-carved totara kitchen, stained-glass windows made by the hosts, and twin outdoor bathtubs — just 30 minutes from the Hobbiton™ Movie Set.

Your journey begins along a winding cobblestone path that leads to a curved timber entrance and a large, circular doorway. Step inside and you'll find a king-size bed dressed in luxurious linens, a handmade kitchen crafted from recycled tōtara, and a generous ensuite with artisan detailing throughout. Every element, from the carved beams to the gently curved windows, speaks to the care and craftsmanship of a simpler, slower world.

Hosts Warren and Sally built Heartwood Hollow over many years, hand-carving each piece of heartwood timber with an antique adze and teaching themselves to make stained-glass windows from scratch. Bricks from the Christchurch earthquake and rīmu from an old Waikato barn are woven into the fabric of the hollow — each piece of material carrying its own quiet story.

Warmed by a crackling wood burner and filled with soft light and earthy textures, the hollow offers deep comfort in every corner. Outside, twin outdoor bathtubs sit beneath the native bush canopy, perfect for stargazing on a clear Waikato night.

As one guest described it: "You feel like you're transported into another world. So relaxing and charming, loved the outdoor baths too." Another simply said: "Fulfilled every one of our little hobbity dreams."

The Hobbiton™ Movie Set in Matamata is just one hour away — the perfect day trip before returning to your own version of Middle-earth for the evening.

Underhill Valley: Whatawhata, Waikato

Why we love it: A one-of-a-kind earth house handcrafted over 15 years into a rolling Waikato hillside, with curved ironwork, native timbers, and warm lighting that makes it feel unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.

Built directly into the rolling hillside of Whatawhata in the Waikato, Underhill Valley is one of the most extraordinary places to stay in New Zealand. The earth house was crafted over 15 years by its hosts using rustic native timbers and intricate ironwork, creating a space that is part architecture, part art, and entirely unlike anything else in the country.

Curved walls, warm lighting, handcrafted details in every corner, and a sense of being nestled deep into the land itself — it's the kind of place that makes you understand why Hobbiton™ captured the world's imagination. There's something deeply comforting about a home that grows from the earth rather than sitting on top of it.

Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and transportive. Outside, the Waikato countryside rolls gently away, and the Hobbiton™ Movie Set itself is just 45 minutes down the road in Matamata — making Underhill Valley a perfect base for those who want to experience a little of that magic before retreating into their own handcrafted world for the night.

As one guest said: "Step straight into a fairytale. For couples looking for something truly memorable, Underhill Valley is hard to beat."

Visiting Hobbiton™: What You Need to Know

The Hobbiton™ Movie Set is located in Matamata in the Waikato, on the Alexander Farm. It's one of New Zealand's most visited attractions and one of the few permanent film sets in the world. Tours run daily and take you through the 12 acres of the Shire™, including the 44 hobbit holes, the Party Tree, and the famous Green Dragon Inn.

A few practical things worth knowing before you go:

Booking in advance is essential. The Hobbiton™ Movie Set sells out frequently, particularly during school holidays and peak summer. Book your tour before you arrive at either escape.

Allow at least half a day. The standard tour takes around two hours. The evening Banquet Tour is a longer, more immersive experience and is worth booking if it fits your dates.

Getting there from each escape:

  • From Heartwood Hollow (Tauranga): approximately 1 hour via SH29
  • From Underhill Valley (Whatawhata): approximately 45 minutes via SH1 and SH29

After the tour: Head back to your earth house, light the fire, run the outdoor bath, and settle in. The contrast between the Hobbiton™ Movie Set and a real handcrafted earth house in the New Zealand countryside is a genuinely special way to spend a day.

What Makes an Earth House?

Both Heartwood Hollow and Underhill Valley are earth houses — structures built into or against the natural contours of the land rather than sitting above it. This style of building has deep roots in vernacular architecture across many cultures, and it's part of what gives these places their quiet magic.

Earth houses tend to stay naturally cool in summer and warm in winter. The curved walls and organic shapes create a sense of enclosure and calm that's hard to replicate in a conventional structure. And when the craftsmanship is as careful as it is in both of these escapes, the result is something that feels genuinely timeless.
