The Ocean House is just 40 minutes from the heart of Wellington and an hour away from the airport.

From your private sanctuary in a protected ecological reserve, watch the Cook Strait's ever-changing moods, with panoramic views stretching across to the Marlborough Sounds and Kaikoura ranges. The "Wellington Alps" rise dramatically behind you, while the turbines of West Wind Farm stand sentinel on the hills.

Inside, a plush king bed is positioned to comfortably soak up the vistas. As the sun rises, slide open the glass doors and let the outside world flood in. Step outside to the covered deck where two hammocks sway – perhaps the most coveted spot for morning coffee. A few steps further is a deep outdoor bath overlooking ocean views.

Experience Wellington's dynamic weather—one moment wrapped in mysterious sea mist, the next bathed in golden sunshine. As day turns to dusk, witness spectacular sunsets paint the sky. In the stillness of night, you may be lucky enough to hear the distinctive call of a kiwi.

EATING AND DRINKING

The Ocean House is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the two-burner gas cooktop provided in your kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

Need a break from cooking? The region offers fantastic dining options! Venture into the city, around a 45 minute drive, to Garage Project (taproom and dinner) and Boulcott Street Bistro is highly recommended by your hosts. Penny's Bakery in Karori (half an hour's drive) is another goodie for a quick snack.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is in Karori, 20 minutes away.

THINGS TO DO

When you can finally tear yourself away from the breathtaking views, a world of simple pleasures awaits. Lose track of time over board games and cards, watch boats drift lazily across the water from the outdoor bath, or lie back and lose yourself in a sky full of stars (binoculars are provided!)

The beach is about an hour's walk along the back road, offering perfect spots for coastal walks and romantic picnics.

Further afield is Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne/Wildlife Sanctuary, the Wētā Cave & Studios (famous for showcasing props, costumes, creatures, and special effects for major films in NZ, like The Lord of the Rings), or spot wild seals at the scenic Red Rocks Reserve along the coastline.

Looking for more adventure? Try mountain biking at the Mākara Peak Mountain Bike Park or trekking at the Makara Walkway.

Your hosts at The Ocean House are Pat, Sherry, and their child, Ivy.

Having called this part of New Zealand home for many years, they’ve cultivated an appreciation for its stunning beauty. Highlights include the ridgeline views overlooking Cook Strait, the ever-changing scenery, and the rare combination of complete privacy with easy access to town.

Inspired by their own glamping experiences with Canopy Camping, they envisioned and created their own escape to demonstrate how ecological mindfulness and modern comfort can blend effortlessly in a carefully designed tiny home.
