River Bothy

River Bothy

Mangonui, Northland

River Bothy is set in the Far North, approximately 4 hours from Auckland and just 5 minutes from nearby Mangonui Village. It's set on the same property as Green Rabbit, a beautiful tiny house.

Nestled amongst 500 Olive trees, the bothy is far from the basic Scottish hut it’s named for. The off-grid riverside cabin is beautifully decorated – with all the comforts of home at hand.

Made from materials reclaimed from the nearby 1890’s settler's farmhouse, the kitchen is a covered space, giving year-round cooking facilities and a relaxing area to soak up the uninterrupted countryside views. The bathroom and shower are right next door, and the outdoor bath is perfectly positioned to enjoy the river views as it meanders gently past.

If you want to get out and about – the scenic Northland area offers lots to see and do with coastal walks, scenic lookouts and white sandy beaches.

At the end of your day, let nature be your companion. Soak up the views over the olive grove, watch dusk settle across the water, and relax by the brazier under the stunning night sky.

  • Your Hosts

Maggie and Brooke are the owners of the River Bothy. They’ll be your hosts during your stay.

Maggie originated from bonny Scotland and Brooke from the Hawke's Bay.

In 2016, after an accumulated 32 years working at Auckland zoo, Maggie and Brooke decided to begin a new chapter in their lives with the goal to build a sustainable lifestyle.  They purchased Riverside Escapes, a riverfront olive grove in the far north of New Zealand.

Riverside Escapes is located on the banks of the Oruaiti River and is surrounded by stunning countryside. The 500 mature olive trees on the property are harvested annually producing ‘Shaken down’, their own brand of delicious olive oil.

Maggie and Brooke have recently completed building their off-grid home ‘The River House’, and their guest accommodation ‘The River Bothy’. They also have a tiny house, The Green Rabbit, and a beautiful revamped house bus called Mr Pickles. They want to encourage guests to come for a visit, unplug from the rush, re-connect, and experience the beauty of Northland and the magic of the Far North.
