Te Rangi

Banks Peninsula, Canterbury

Te Rangi is located on Banks Peninsula, 1.5 hours from Christchurch city and 30 minutes from Akaroa.

The self-contained cottage sits on a 5-hectare hillside retreat, offering breathtaking views of Akaroa Harbour and Tuhiraki (Mt Bossu).

Inside features a kitchen, living, and dining space warmed by a crackling woodburner. The thoughtfully placed deck offers a front-row seat to nature's spectacle. The soothing murmur of a nearby stream blends with the melodic chorus of native birds—tui, bellbirds, and kereru—while the vast blue sea stretches toward the horizon.

The outdoor hot tub is situated among the beautiful native bush, right above the bubbling stream. Explore the property's private walking tracks through the pristine bush, or simply unwind and watch the ever-changing light play across the harbour and surrounding hills.

  • eating and drinking

Te Rangi is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the four-element ceramic cooktop, electric frypan, oven and Baby Q Weber BBQ provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

Need a break from cooking? Akaroa is the place to be! The Common Café & Garden Bar is perfect for brunch, lunch and dinner. Ma Maison Restaurant is a lovely dinner spot for seafood lovers. And if you're craving something sweet, you should make your way to A La Baguette.

Or, if you don't want to travel into Akaroa, The Duvauchelle Hotel is excellent option.

For takeaways, try Kaimoana on Rue Jolie.

The nearest convenience store is at Duvauchelle, 15 minutes away, for basic supplies or there is a Foursquare Supermarket in Akaroa, 30 minutes away.

  • things to do

Inside the cottage, lose yourself in the extensive CD collection through the quality stereo system, or challenge your companion to a game of chess, cards, or a 1000-piece puzzle. And when you're ready to unwind further, the wood-fired hot tub nestled in the bush is waiting for you.

The surrounding area offers plenty of attractions within easy reach. Just 1km down the hill, check out the swimming and fishing areas at Wainui Beach. You can also purchase fresh Akaroa Salmon directly from Wainui Wharf on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Take a scenic drive up Bossu Road to Summit Road, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Southern Bays and Salmon Farm. This route also leads to the township of Little River, where you can explore its great gallery, enjoy a meal at the welcoming Little River Pub (often featuring live music), or relax at the local cafe.

Wine lovers shouldn't miss French Farm Vineyard, where you can sample local wines through their tasting experiences.

  • your hosts

Your hosts at Te Rangi are Jen and Steve.

The couple shares their 5-hectare property, called Kahikatea, with their four dogs – Springer Spaniels Fi and Meg, Staghound Blue, and Kelpie Ruby – along with cats Charlie and Kitty Wee.

Jen and Steve's story is one of rediscovered love. Having lost touch in their youth, fate brought them back together three years ago. After discovering and staying at other Canopy Camping escapes on the West Coast, they were inspired to lovingly restore both their home and Te Rangi cottage.

The name Te Rangi was given to the cottage when it was built in 1996, meaning "From the sky" or "Heavenly." It perfectly describes this peaceful retreat, which overlooks the hills and the Akaroa Harbour and Heads.

  • "

The most amazing place to spend our last three nights in NZ. The cottage was exceptional and felt like home. The views were outstanding. Thoughtful hosts met us to guide us through the closed road from recent storm damage. Thank you so much for sharing Te Rangi with us.

Wow, what a beautiful place to be in. Te Rangi was located in such a lovely setting, including the drive up to the house. Fresh flowers in every room, eggs for breakfast, and lemons to enjoy. The hosts could not have been more hospitable and friendly. Great hot tub, walks to enjoy, and a cosy fireplace to enjoy nights playing Scrabble. Highly recommend this lovely place to stay.

Beautiful location with views out to the harbour heads even on an unseasonably cold and wet Jan weekend. The cottage was cosy and warm and we appreciated the fire being lit before we arrived. Hot tub was fun and we loved the bush track and walking around the area. Thanks so much!

First trip away with our four month old baby. Was a gorgeous outlook and had everything we needed on site including a gorgeous bush walk and hot tub. Fire was lit for our arrival, and fresh flowers placed throughout was a special touch. Te Rangi had a very comfy home away from home vibe. Great spot to completely unwind and enjoy spectacular views.
