Top Hut

Top Hut

Coromandel

Top Hut is situated on Coromandel Peninsula, a scenic 3-hour drive from Auckland or Hamilton and 40 minutes from Coromandel Town.

The elevated, single-room hut is nestled amidst native bush, surrounded by Nīkau, Kauri, Rimu, and the vibrant Rātā. Private and serene, it offers a true escape from everyday life, bordering a beautiful native reserve.

Tastefully decorated, this unique accommodation is thoughtfully designed to immerse guests in nature. Expansive windows open wide, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors, with views that make you feel nestled among the treetops. Soft sheepskins and oversized cushions on the sofas and window seats invite you to relax in the dappled sunlight. As dusk settles, step onto the deck and be serenaded by the native Ruru under a canopy of stars.

Bushwalks and native trees abound, with plenty of kākā, wood pigeons, fantail, tūī, and bellbirds to be found in the surrounding forest. A 15 minute walk from the hut leads you down to a rocky shore - the perfect place for a peaceful picnic, fishing, or just sea gazing in an idyllic, unspoilt Pōhutukawa fringed bay.

  • Eating and Drinking

Top Hut is self-catering. Just bring your own food, and cook meals using the small gas BBQ or the hut’s kitchen, equipped with a gas cooktop and oven. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

There are several very good restaurants in Coromandel Town, a 35-40 minute drive away including Weta Cafe, UMU Restaurant and Cafe and Pepper Tree Restaurant and Bar. Colville township has a friendly little cafe, where the food is very local, homemade and delicious. Good coffee, good ice cream and the farm's own meat are also sold there.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is in either Colville or Coromandel, a half-hour's drive away.

  • Things To Do

There is a short walk on the property up to a lookout point for taking in the stunning views and spectacular sunsets. For keen walkers, enjoy walking the multiple bush tracks in the Department of Conservation Kennedy Bay Block situated on the boundary of the property. Maps and advice will be provided.

  • Your Hosts

Your hosts at Top Hut are Linda and Geoff, and their twin children Alex and Leah.

The family has enjoyed life at Top Hut for 40 years, beginning with Geoff's father, Colin, and his partner, Kit, the original hosts. Colin and Kit purchased the property from friends, living in the hut for over two decades. Kit later introduced Top Hut as a Canopy Camping escape, and today, Linda and Geoff continue her legacy, caring for this treasured retreat.

Linda and Geoff love the natural wonders of Tuateawa - the sparkling Hauraki waters, the lush native bush, and the ancient pōhutukawa, pūriri, and nīkau palms that surround Top Hut. Walking tracks wind through towering trees, leading to rocky shores and crystal-clear pools filled with vibrant marine life, making it a place they truly cherish.

Top Hut is more than just a place. it’s a sanctuary connecting people to nature, bringing peace and renewal, just as Kit envisioned when she first welcomed guests to this stunning escape. Their second retreat, Tuateawa Coastal Retreat, also offers another stunning escape, designed for families.
