Trehane Chill

Nelson

Trehane Chill is a convenient 15 minutes from Nelson City in the Tasman District of the South Island.

Tucked away on a 14-acre lifestyle block surrounded by orchards, streams, native bush and uninterrupted rural views, this escape offers a picturesque change from the ordinary.

Every detail of Trehane Chill reflects thoughtful design and rustic elegance.

Two hand-crafted fairytale cabins each contain a queen-size bed, one nestled in a loft space with a comfortable lounging space beneath. Connecting the cabins is a covered deck. A whimsical and cosy lean-to style kitchen sits in between with a fireplace and curated culinary tools to delight any foody.

Enjoy an alfresco bathing experience under the outdoor shower beneath the Kānuka canopy or in the clawfoot bathtub tucked in the bush. A fully mirrored toilet cabin reflects the green surroundings - and adds a unique touch! If you prefer to bathe out of the elements, the enclosed blue rainfall shower has you covered.

Host, Rachael, also has a 14m swimming pool fed from her natural stream with views of the ocean, located right next to her home on the property. Glamping guests are welcome to use the pool to cool off on a hot day.

There are many cosy nooks to discover on the property, inviting you to unwind, connect, and embrace your surroundings. If you feel the urge to explore, Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, Rabbit Island and other must-see spots are less than an hour and a half away. Your host will also happily provide tips on things to do in the local area.

  • eating and drinking

Trehane Chill is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the four-ring gas burner and Weber BBQ provided in your undercover lean-to-style kitchen. A fire chiminea is located in the kitchen, perfect for toasties or marshmallows. A few metres away is an outdoor fire pit with a repurposed steel saw blade for cooking over the fire. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need. Your host is a foody so curated tools and midcentury kitchenware are also provided to transport your dining experience.

Nelson has plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from, and it's a mere 15 minutes away. The Free House Pub (dog friendly) is a craft beer mecca nestled within a restored old church. You have the option to dine in and order takeout. If you're looking for a 'vibey' coffee spot, Ruby’s Espresso is an outdoor cafe with beanbags and tables at the marina (also dog friendly!). The Boat Shed Cafe sits over the water and is ideal for watching the sunsets! Your host also recommends Cantina Nicola, Arden Bar, Parts & Service and Hawker House as great dining options.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is a Four Square in Atawhai, 5 minutes away. Nelson is 15 minutes away with more supermarket options.

  • things to do

Trehane Chill is a retreat that caters for all. The fun never ends for children, as there’s a pool available. The pool is unheated so brilliant in summer, and bracing for those cold water aficionados. There's also an outdoor shower, outdoor bathtub, and plenty of outdoor games such as Pétanque, Kubb, Vintage Ring Toss and a full trunk of games, jigsaws and art supplies.

Venture into the picturesque orchards, where you are welcome to harvest any fruit you see. Continue walking up the creek and through the regenerating bush until you reach the outstanding 150-year-old Tōtara tree. At sunset, we recommend climbing to the top of the land (up the shared driveway) to watch the orange and yellow hues paint the sky.

Your host adores reading and has shared some of her library with you...So find yourself a book and head to one of the many nooks on the property, cosy up, and delve into a good book.

  • your host

Your host at Trehane Chill is Rachael and her furry companion, Obie.

Trehane Chill sits within the Wakapuaka Ngāti Tama lands. Rich in history, from both ancient times, fraught settler land dealings, and in more recent times. Since the 1950s it has been a hub for organic, permaculture, and woofer movements, embodying a quiet centre of the land-based counterculture in Nelson.

Rachael, raised in Nelson Whakatū, found solace in an eccentric family known for their wildness, creativity, and curiosity. The woodsheds, once playgrounds, were moved to this land in 2013, now serving as homes. The joy, whimsy and peace from those days continue to inspire her.

In 2011, friends introduced her to a piece of land with which she instantly connected. Starting in a tent, fetching water from the creek (which also served as a fridge!), she transformed this rugged terrain into a Kiwi fairytale over time. Rachael cherishes being surrounded by water, which Trehane Chill offers along with uninterrupted views, privacy, birdlife, and tranquillity. Glamping here is a return to childhood playgrounds for Rachael and her friends in another lifetime.

Rachael is a descendant of Celtic pirate miners who settled in Aotearoa NZ in 1878. In ancient Celtic, "Trehane" translates to a "treed green hamlet - with a touch of magic."

After years of Trehane Chill being enjoyed by friends and family, Rachael warmly extends an invitation to you to come and experience the magic of this curious and beautiful place - to be restored by having time out of time.

We loved our stay at Trehane Chill. The place is so well set-up and in the most peaceful setting. Loved sitting by the fire while it was raining outside, and it was even better the next day when the rain had stopped. The outdoor shower is amazing, and my partner loved having an outdoor bath while gazing at the stars.

The best zen place in the South Island! I had been under a lot of stress, and this place was just what the doctor ordered. I took my 21-year-old daughter and my three year old Staffy, Pablo, along for the trip. We struck gold as soon as we met Rachael. Rachael is so lovely. The atmosphere there is next level, trust me! I wish we had stayed longer than one night; we will definitely be back. Thank you again Rachael.

Trehane Chill is absolutely amazing, as is the awesome host Rachael! You will feel like you have entered paradise as you sit by the fire, looking out over nature or relaxing in the hot tub. Rachael has done a fantastic job with the place, adding lots of loving touches! Everything is super private (including the outdoor shower!), and you may get lucky enough to have snuggles with Obie the dog if you wish. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to go back for longer. Don’t make our mistake; you must stay at least two nights to make the most of everything on offer!
