10 of the Most Unique Places to Stay in New Zealand

17 July 2026 - 12 minute read time

New Zealand has no shortage of beautiful places to stay. But some escapes go beyond beautiful — they stop you in your tracks the moment you arrive, make you reach for your camera before you've even put your bag down, and leave you with a story worth telling for years afterwards.

These ten stays are exactly that. Handcrafted earth houses, a renovated boat, a bike-themed hut in Rotorua's redwoods, a Balinese-inspired bush retreat, a restored railway carriage — each one completely different, all of them unforgettable.

1. The Love Boat: Near Carterton, Wairarapa

View The Love Boat →

Why we love it: A beautifully renovated boat tucked into its own private nook in the Wairarapa, with Tararua Range views, a stargazing skylight above the bed, a river swimming hole two minutes away, and dogs welcome.

The Love Boat is one of those stays that needs to be seen to be believed. Transformed from a boat into exceptional accommodation by former film industry hosts Danny and Sally, every detail has been considered — from the whimsical nautical interiors to the thoughtful touches that make it feel genuinely special rather than just themed.

A skylight sits above the bed for stargazing under the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve. A two-minute stroll takes you to the Waingawa River and a beautiful swimming hole. The Tararua Ranges frame the view outside. Dogs are welcome. As one guest put it: "We had a clear evening, and the sky was amazing. The area and setup were tranquil — an amazing place to just chill out."

From NZ$295/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | Dogs welcome | 20 mins from Carterton, 1.5hrs from Wellington

2. All About Bikes: Rotorua, Bay of Plenty

View All About Bikes →

Why we love it: A bike-themed hut on a private 4.5-hectare hillside in Rotorua, with 180-degree views across the Whakarewarewa Mountain Bike Park, redwood groves, and farmland — just 5 minutes from the world-renowned trails.

Set on a private 4.5-hectare organic hillside block in Rotorua, All About Bikes is one of the most creatively conceived escapes in our collection. The hut takes its inspiration from its proximity to the world-renowned Whakarewarewa Mountain Bike Park, with bike-themed touches woven throughout the property. Three connected huts — a kitchen and dining area, a cosy bedroom with a mezzanine above, and a bathroom — are linked by a boardwalk and covered veranda.

The 180-degree views sweep across farmland, pine forest, and the bike park below. Keen riders can reach the trails in five minutes by bike. Everyone else can simply sit on the deck, soak up the scenery, and enjoy the fact that Rotorua's restaurants and geothermal attractions are just a short drive away.

From NZ$320/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 5 mins from Rotorua city, 5 mins from Whakarewarewa MTB Park

3. Underhill Valley: Whatawhata, Waikato

View Underhill Valley →

Why we love it: A one-of-a-kind earth house handcrafted over 15 years into a rolling Waikato hillside, with curved ironwork, native timbers, and warm lighting that makes it feel unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.

Built directly into the rolling hillside of Whatawhata in the Waikato, Underhill Valley is one of the most extraordinary places to stay in New Zealand. Handcrafted over 15 years by its hosts using rustic native timbers and intricate ironwork, this earth house is part architecture, part art, and entirely unlike anything else in the country.

Curved walls, warm lighting, and handcrafted details in every corner create a space that feels both intimate and completely transportive. The Hobbiton™ Movie Set is just 45 minutes down the road in Matamata, making this a perfect base for those who want to experience a little of that magic before retreating into their own handcrafted world for the night.

As one guest said: "Step straight into a fairytale. For couples looking for something truly memorable, Underhill Valley is hard to beat."

From NZ$440/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 20 mins from Hamilton, 45 mins from Hobbiton™

4. Heartwood Hollow: Tauranga, Bay of Plenty

View Heartwood Hollow →

Why we love it: A handcrafted earth house with a circular doorway, hand-carved tōtara kitchen, stained-glass windows made by the hosts, twin outdoor bathtubs under the native bush canopy, and Hobbiton™ just an hour away.

Heartwood Hollow is a labour of love unlike anything you've stayed in before. Hosts Warren and Sally spent years building this earth house by hand, carving each piece of heartwood timber with an antique adze and teaching themselves to make stained-glass windows from scratch. Bricks from the Christchurch earthquake and rīmu from an old Waikato barn are woven into the fabric of the hollow.

Step through the large circular doorway into a king-size bedroom with a handmade tōtara kitchen, warm earthy textures, and a wood burner keeping things cosy. Outside, twin outdoor bathtubs sit beneath the native bush canopy, perfect for stargazing on a clear Bay of Plenty night.

As one guest described it: "Fulfilled every one of our little hobbity dreams."

Why we love it: Two A-frame huts deep in a native beech forest with twin outdoor baths under the canopy, underfloor heating, a gas fire pit, and a private bush loop walk — 45 minutes from Wellington.

Two charming A-frame huts nestled deep in a stunning native beech forest in the Blue Mountains, 45 minutes from Wellington. One hut holds a cosy queen bedroom with a loft net; the other a quaint kitchen, bathroom, and dining space. Both overlook the beautiful forest canopy.

Down a short flight of steps, twin bathtubs sit perfectly positioned for starlit soaks while listening to the evening chorus of moreporks. Tūī sing by day, the gas fire pit glows by evening, and underfloor heating keeps things toasty inside. A private bush loop walk starts right at the property.

As one guest described it: "Such a beautiful sanctuary nestled in the heart of the woods. The privacy is exceptional, and the facilities provide everything you could possibly need."

6. Rustic ReTreet: Golden Bay, Tasman

View Rustic ReTreet →

Why we love it: A beautifully handcrafted family treehouse tucked into an Oak tree canopy in Golden Bay, built using timber grown on the property and recycled materials, with an outdoor bath and hammock swaying in the breeze.

Tucked away among the trees on a quiet Golden Bay property, Rustic ReTreet is a beautifully and creatively built escape that feels like a proper woodland hideaway. Hosts Janine (an artist) and Simon (a beekeeper and boat builder) built it themselves using sustainable principles — timber grown on the property, repurposed and recycled materials, and a genuine love of creating special places.

Set on an elevated deck, the ReTreet sleeps four, with a queen-size bed and lounge space downstairs and a sleeping loft for kids above. There's a semi-outdoor kitchen, outdoor bath, and a hammock for swaying in the canopy. Glorious Golden Bay beaches and the start of the Abel Tasman are just minutes away.

7. Sophie's: Darfield, Canterbury

View Sophie's →

Why we love it: A distinctive eco-friendly zome structure on the banks of the Selwyn River, with a star-shaped skylight above the queen bed, a wood burner, a sunken fire pit, and a wood-fired hot tub surrounded by native bush ferns.

Sophie's is built around one of the most unusual structures in our collection — a zome, an eco-friendly geodesic design made from interlocking geometric panels that creates a beautifully curved, organic living space. Tucked into native bush ferns on the banks of the Selwyn River near Darfield, it feels seamlessly integrated with its surroundings.

Inside, the star-shaped skylight above the queen bed is the showstopper — perfect for drifting off to sleep under the Canterbury sky. A wood burner keeps things cosy, and outside a sunken fire pit and wood-fired hot tub surrounded by lush greenery complete the picture. The river is just metres away for a morning picnic or a refreshing dip.

As one guest said: "Sophie's was an amazing spot and everything was so well thought out. A perfect getaway destination to relax and unwind."

8. The Ark: Diamond Harbour, Canterbury

View The Ark →

Why we love it: An off-grid ark-style cabin built on top of an old wooden boat hull discovered buried in the blackberry, sitting 15 metres from the edge of Diamond Harbour with outdoor bath and shower, harbour views, and dogs welcome.

The story of The Ark starts with a buried boat hull discovered beneath blackberry by hosts Steve (a sculptor) and Wendy (an artist) when they first cleared their land at Purau Bay. That discovery inspired everything — an off-grid, ark-shaped cabin built right on top of the old hull, sitting just 15 metres from the edge of Diamond Harbour.

The one-room cabin has a queen bed, kitchen, and a pot belly fire. The shower and bath are both outdoors, perfectly positioned to soak up the harbour views. A two-minute walk takes you to your own piece of the bay, and a 40-minute coastal walk leads to Diamond Harbour cafe for coffee. Dogs are welcome. The Black Cat ferry to Lyttelton runs just minutes away.

As one guest described it: "The Ark is a beautiful, relaxing haven. From sunrise showers and coastal walks to baths at sunset with fish and chips from five minutes up the road — it has everything you need for a peaceful, off-grid experience."

From NZ$345/pn | Sleeps 2 | Dogs welcome | 45 mins from Christchurch

9. French Peak Wagon: Banks Peninsula, Canterbury

View French Peak Wagon →

Why we love it: A thoughtfully restored wagon on the edge of a vineyard on Banks Peninsula, with top-notch ocean views, a dog-friendly policy, and Akaroa just 20 minutes down the road.

Perched on the edge of a vineyard on Banks Peninsula with sweeping ocean views stretching to the horizon, French Peak Wagon is a genuinely one-of-a-kind stay. The wagon has been thoughtfully restored and positioned to make the most of its spectacular setting — wake up to vineyard rows in the foreground and the Pacific glittering beyond.

It's one of the few escapes in our collection that welcomes dogs, making it a brilliant choice for couples who want something unusual without leaving their four-legged travel companion behind. Akaroa's charming village is just 20 minutes away for dining and harbour cruises, and the vineyard setting makes it a natural base for exploring Banks Peninsula's food and wine scene.

As one guest said: "Not even sure paradise can accurately describe the location and facilities. Incredibly relaxing and beautiful scenery."

From NZ$280/pn | Sleeps 2 | Dogs welcome | 20 mins from Akaroa, 1hr 10 mins from Christchurch

10. Rockwood Station: The Carriage, Windwhistle, Canterbury

View Rockwood Station The Carriage →

Why we love it: A lovingly restored 1800s railway goods carriage set where two streams join to form the Hororata River, with Mt Hutt views, a 100-acre native bush block to explore, and a natural swimming hole at the bottom of the farm.

In 2019, hosts Ben and Cheryl purchased an old goods carriage and spent months lovingly restoring and transforming it into a genuinely special glamping experience. The Carriage sits at the junction of two streams that join to form the Hororata River on their fifth-generation Canterbury farm, with a large deck enjoying expansive views toward Mt Hutt.

Inside, the two bedrooms make it ideal for two couples or a family with children. Outside, 100 acres of native bush is yours to explore, a natural swimming hole sits at the base of the farm, and in winter Mt Hutt is just 50 minutes away. As the sun sets, the Canterbury sky turns to technicolour above the river.

As one guest described it: "A beautiful place to slow down, completely relax, and destress."
