The Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand's most beloved road trip destinations. Ancient kauri forests, deserted beaches, Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, Driving Creek Railway, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the North Island — all within three hours of Auckland.
We have some genuinely exceptional glamping escapes across the peninsula, from beachside cabins a minute's walk from the sand to remote clifftop hideaways above the Hauraki Gulf. Here are ten of our favourites.
1. Koru Kabin: Near Tairua, Coromandel
Why we love it: A cosy off-grid cabin on protected QEII land above Tairua, with sweeping views to the Aldermans Islands, a sunken outdoor bath on the deck, and one of the most captivating sunrise and moonrise spots on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Set on a private hilltop spot surrounded by native bush just 12 minutes from Tairua, Koru Kabin is one of the most loved escapes in our Coromandel collection. The views are mesmerising — stretching to the Aldermans Islands, Shoe and Slipper Islands, Mount Paku, and the glowing Tairua township below.
Inside, large glass windows keep you connected to the natural world. A wood burner adds warmth on cooler evenings, and the sunken outdoor bath on the spacious deck is the perfect place to soak as the stars emerge. Cathedral Cove is a short drive away for a morning adventure.
As one guest said: "The view was phenomenal, the stars at night were something else. The bath was such a treat."
From NZ$290/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 12 mins from Tairua, just over 2hrs from Auckland

2. Wharekawa Farm: Near Whangamata, Coromandel
Why we love it: A beautifully styled shepherd's hut beneath an ancient pōhutukawa on a 125-acre farm, with private beach access via a bush track, estuary views, and a 1km coastal walk through native forest.
Set beneath the shade of an ancient pōhutukawa on an elevated, private spot near Whangamata, Wharekawa Farm is one of the most photogenic escapes on the Coromandel. The stylishly decorated shepherd's hut has perfectly framed views across the Wharekawa estuary and ocean beyond, with 125 acres of mixed native bush and pasture to explore.
A 1km estuary walk winds through a gorgeous pōhutukawa forest, and Mao Mao Bay — a white sand private beach — is accessible via a bush track and steps from the property. A covered outdoor kitchen and bathroom complete the setup. Pure Coromandel glamping.

3. Skylark: Otama Beach, Coromandel
Why we love it: A beautifully styled hillside cabin above the sand dunes at Otama Beach, with shimmering ocean views, a freestanding outdoor bath, a fire pit, and Otama Beach just a minute's walk away.
Perched on a hillside above the sand dunes and native bush at Otama Beach, Skylark is a place to properly switch off. The modest cabin is styled with soft natural textures and warm details, with the bedroom opening directly to the ocean view so you wake each morning to the sight of the sea.
Life slows down outdoors. Sink into the freestanding outdoor bath, refresh under the open-air shower after a swim, and gather around the fire pit for marshmallows under the stars. Otama Beach is just a minute's walk from the cabin — one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the peninsula.
From NZ$250/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 40 mins from Coromandel Town, 30 mins from Whitianga

4. Blackjack Cabin: Otama Beach, Coromandel
Why we love it: A hillside beachside cabin with a super king bed upstairs, an open-air circular stone bath for two on the deck, a smokeless fire pit, and Otama Beach just a minute's walk away.
On the same property as Skylark, Blackjack Cabin has its own distinct character. Golden sunlight pours through the windows and doors, casting a warm glow across the rooms and framing the ever-changing seascape. Wander upstairs to discover a super king bed with sweeping ocean views. Step onto the deck to find the circular stone bath — big enough for two and perfectly positioned for a sunset soak.
After a dip in the ocean, rinse off under the outdoor shower, then share wine and a platter next to the smokeless fire pit. Both Skylark and Blackjack Cabin together make an ideal option for two couples wanting their own private beachside setup.

6. Ruru Room: Port Charles, Coromandel
Why we love it: Two simple, beautifully appointed cabins on a small clifftop point near Port Charles, with incredible sea views in every direction, snapper fishing off the rocks below, gannets and rays in the bay, and ruru calling from the trees at night.
High up on a small point near the remote Coromandel settlement of Port Charles, Ruru Room is one of the most quietly dramatic escapes in our collection. Two small cabins — one for sleeping, living, and cooking, the other a bathroom — are connected by decked walkways, both light, bright, and tastefully simple.
From the bed, watch the sun rise over the sea to the east as the tide laps the rocks below. Walk down to the rocky beach for an early morning swim, cast a line for snapper from the fish bench, or head to nearby Sandy Bay — a large gentle crescent of golden sand just 10 minutes on foot. The final 30 minutes of the drive is on an unsealed road, which is very much part of the experience.
As one guest described it: "Ruru Room is simply stunning — a piece of paradise right here in Aotearoa."
From NZ$280/pn | Sleeps 2 | Adults only | 1hr from Coromandel Town, 3hrs 45 mins from Auckland

7. Top Hut: Tuateawa, Coromandel
Why we love it: An elevated treetop hut nestled among ancient Nīkau, Kauri, Rimu, and Rātā on a DOC reserve boundary in the remote northern Coromandel, with expansive windows that blur the line between the cabin and the forest canopy around you.
Situated on the Coromandel Peninsula 40 minutes from Coromandel Town, Top Hut is a private, serene escape nestled amidst native bush and bordered by a beautiful native reserve. The single-room hut is tastefully decorated and thoughtfully designed to immerse guests in nature, with expansive windows that open wide to views that make you feel nestled among the treetops.
Soft sheepskins and oversized cushions invite you to slow down completely. Multiple bush tracks wind through the DOC Kennedy Bay Block on the property's boundary, and the property is on the same land as Tuateawa Coastal Retreat, run by the same warm family who have cared for this land for 40 years.

Getting to the Coromandel: Road Trip Tips
The Coromandel Peninsula is approximately 2 to 3.5 hours from Auckland depending on your destination. The most scenic route is via Thames and up the western coast. The road narrows considerably north of Coromandel Town and becomes gravel in places — allow extra time and drive carefully, especially at night.
Most escapes are self-catering and located on rural or remote properties. Stock up on groceries in Thames, Whitianga, Tairua, or Coromandel Town before heading to your escape. The further north you go (Port Charles, Tuateawa), the more remote the supply situation becomes — bring everything you need.
Best time to visit: The Coromandel is a year-round destination, though summer is peak season and weekends book out fast. Spring and autumn offer mild weather with fewer crowds. Winter is quieter, more intimate, and excellent for stargazing.
Things to Do on the Coromandel Peninsula
Cathedral Cove is one of New Zealand's most iconic natural landmarks — accessible by ferry from Hahei or on foot via a 45-minute walk through coastal bush. Book your ferry in advance in summer.
Hot Water Beach is a must-do — bring a spade at low tide and dig your own natural thermal pool right on the beach.
Driving Creek Railway and Pottery near Coromandel Town is a wonderful half-day outing, with a narrow-gauge railway through the surrounding bush.
The Coromandel Coastal Walkway near Fletcher Bay offers one of the best coastal walks in the North Island, with views stretching across the Hauraki Gulf.
Whitianga is the main hub for the Mercury Bay area, with great cafes, the Whitianga Ferry crossing, and access to some of the best fishing and diving on the peninsula.
