The Best Places to Stay Near Punakaiki on the West Coast

3 July 2026 - 10 minute read time

Punakaiki sits on one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in New Zealand. The Paparoa Ranges rise steeply from the Tasman Sea, nikau palms line the highway, and the famous Pancake Rocks send plumes of spray skyward when the swell is up. It's the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, stay longer, and actually look at where you are.

We have five glamping escapes within minutes of Punakaiki, each one different, all of them worth the drive. Whether you're heading down the Great Coast Highway, exploring the Paparoa National Park, or looking for a base for the Paparoa Track, this is where to stay.

Things to Do Near Punakaiki

Before we get to the escapes, here's what makes Punakaiki worth building a trip around.

Pancake Rocks and Blowholes

The Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point are one of New Zealand's most iconic natural formations — layered limestone formations stacked like pancakes over millions of years of erosion, with blowholes that shoot seawater skyward when conditions are right. The loop track takes around 20 minutes and is one of the most photographed spots on the West Coast. Entry is free and the car park is right off SH6.

The Pororari River Track

One of the best walks in Paparoa National Park and an absolute must-do from this base. The track follows the Pororari River through a stunning limestone gorge, with nikau palms, native bush, and clear turquoise water along the entire route. The return walk takes around 3 hours and is suitable for most fitness levels. Mountain bikes are also welcome on the track, making it a great cycling option too.

The Paparoa Track

One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Paparoa Track is a 55km point-to-point trail connecting Blackball to Punakaiki through the Paparoa Range, taking in ridgelines, valleys, and coastal views. It takes 2 to 3 days on foot or can be completed in a day on an e-bike. For those wanting a taste without the full track, the lower sections near Punakaiki offer excellent day walk options.

Kayaking

The Punakaiki area offers some of the best sea kayaking on the South Island's West Coast. Paddle along the dramatic limestone cliffs, explore sea caves, spot fur seals hauled out on the rocks, and watch the sun go down over the Tasman. Several operators in the area offer guided tours and kayak hire.

Truman Track and Beach

A short 15-minute walk through nikau palms leads to a wild, dramatic beach with sea stacks, caves, and the kind of scenery that makes you feel like you've found somewhere properly remote. Don't swim here — the surf is powerful and unpredictable — but it's one of the most photogenic spots in the region.

Fox River Walk

A scenic 2-hour bush walk up the Fox River valley, just north of the escapes. A nice option for a morning adventure before settling in for the afternoon.

5 Glamping Escapes Near Punakaiki

1. Fox Hut: Near Punakaiki, West Coast

View Fox Hut →

Why we love it: A clifftop gold miner's hut with recycled timber walls, brass accents, huge ocean-view windows, and a cedar wood-fired hot tub on the deck — just 7 minutes from Pancake Rocks.

Modelled on a pitched-roof gold miner's hut, Fox Hut sits on a coastal clifftop on the Great Coast Highway, 7 minutes from Punakaiki. Far from basic, the interior oozes rustic luxury — recycled timber-lined walls, brass accents, plush floor rugs, and sheepskins create a space that is both considered and genuinely cosy. The huge glass windows frame the ocean view from every angle.

A wood-fired cedar hot tub is set into the deck at the front of the hut, the perfect place to soak as the sun drops over the Tasman Sea. Fox Hut is the sister hut to Woodpecker Hut on the same property, and the two together make an ideal option for two couples travelling together.

As one guest put it: "The hot tub, ocean sounds and stars were a magical combination at night. The interior is beautiful — it feels luxurious."

Why we love it: Two small off-grid timber huts joined by a covered outdoor kitchen, with north-facing ocean views from every window, a cedar hot tub on the deck, and the sound of the Tasman as a constant backdrop.

Woodpecker Hut consists of two small off-grid timber huts — one a luxurious king bedroom, the other a comfortable lounge with a wood-burning stove — joined by a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. Built by a local builder and artist, the huts have been crafted right down to the position of the nails. Waney-edge weatherboard and native timber lining give the property a rustic, natural charm, while the interior decor is cosy and contemporary.

Facing north toward the ocean, the huts enjoy all-day sun. A cedar hot tub set into the deck at the front offers sweeping ocean views, and Woodpecker Bay is just a short walk below for those who want to explore the caves and coastline.

As one guest described a winter stay: "It felt cosy, even with four seasons in one day. Sunset from the hot tub was a highlight."
