10 of the Best Glamping Escapes in Canterbury, New Zealand

Canterbury is one of New Zealand's most diverse and dramatic regions. Snow-capped alpine ranges, braided glacial rivers, rolling high country farmland, ancient volcanic coastline on Banks Peninsula, and some of the clearest, darkest skies in the South Island. It's also home to some of our most beloved glamping escapes in New Zealand.

Whether you're after a romantic couples retreat, a family adventure, a dog-friendly getaway, or a luxury off-grid experience, Canterbury has something for everyone. Here are 10 of our favourite glamping escapes in Canterbury, all within 1.5 hours of Christchurch.

Getting to Canterbury: Road Trip Tips

Christchurch is the natural base for a Canterbury glamping trip, with most of these escapes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours from the city. A few things worth knowing before you head off: most properties are self-catering and located on rural land, so stock up on groceries in Christchurch, Oxford, Amberley, Rangiora, or Methven before heading out. Several properties have gravel or farm track access, so allow a little extra time and follow your pre-arrival instructions carefully.

For the Banks Peninsula escapes, Akaroa is your closest town for supplies. For Foxdown and Tawanui Farm Domes, Amberley and Cheviot are your best bet.

Best time to visit: Canterbury is a genuine year-round destination. Summer brings long warm days perfect for riverside swims, mountain biking, and outdoor baths under warm skies. Winter transforms the high country into something magical, with snow on the ranges, cosy fires, and some of the best hot tub soaks of the year. Spring and autumn are underrated, with fewer crowds, mild temperatures, and stunning light.

Things to Do in Canterbury

Beyond the escapes themselves, Canterbury is one of New Zealand's most activity-rich regions. A few highlights worth planning around:

Mt Hutt is just 30 minutes from Methven and is one of New Zealand's best ski fields in winter, with mountain biking and walking in summer. Akaroa on Banks Peninsula is a charming French-influenced village with dolphin swimming, harbour cruises, and excellent food and wine. The Waipara Valley wine region is right on the doorstep of Hill Block Hut and Foxdown Hut, with Black Estate and Greystone Wines both worth a visit. The Oxford region has bush walks, markets, cafes, and the famous Sheffield Pie Shop just 20 minutes away. And for those chasing adventure, Hanmer Springs is under two hours from Christchurch with thermal pools, bungy jumping, and mountain biking.
