Dog Friendly Accommodation in the North Island

26 August 2026 - 13 minute read time

Your dog deserves a good holiday too. These escapes welcome dogs without compromise — the views are still stunning, the outdoor baths are still there, and the hosts genuinely mean it when they say your dog is welcome. Here are some of our favourites in the collection across the North Island in New Zealand.

For South Island stays, check out our guide to dog friendly accommodation in the South Island.

1. The Hūnua Retreat: Hūnua, Auckland

Once an old stables turned woodshed, The Hūnua Retreat has been transformed into one of the cosiest and most romantic escapes within 45 minutes of Auckland and dogs are welcome. Nestled in a quiet native bush glade overlooking a still, glassy pond, it feels remarkably secluded despite being less than an hour from the city.

The wood burner keeps things warm on cooler evenings, and an oversized outdoor bath sits perfectly positioned for soaking while the birds settle in for the evening. Tūī, pīwakawaka, and kererū provide the soundtrack throughout the day. A beautiful anniversary escape for couples who won't leave their dog behind.

Things to Know Before Bringing Your Dog

Every escape on this list welcomes dogs, but a few things are worth knowing before you book:

Stock friendly. Most of our escapes are on working farms or rural properties. Dogs must be calm and stock-friendly at all times, and must be kept under supervision or on a lead around livestock.

Additional fees. Some escapes charge a small per-night dog fee. Check the individual listing for details before booking.

One dog per booking. Most escapes allow one dog per stay. Ararimu Downs allows up to two. Check individual listings for the current policy.
