Mapauriki Retreat is situated on Coromandel Peninsula, a scenic 3-hour drive from Auckland or Hamilton and 25 minutes from both Coromandel Township and Whitianga.

Nestled on the edge of Matarangi Harbour, the retreat offers stunning views over farmland, the harbour, and the Coromandel Ranges. You’ll be just a short distance from the region’s most beautiful beaches, including Matarangi, Whangapoua, Kuaotunu, Otama, Opito, and the iconic New Chums Beach.

The luxury glamping tent is designed for comfort and relaxation. Wake to the gentle chorus of nature as you open the tent's drapes letting in the morning light and harbour views. Inside, you’ll find a small dining table and a comfy couch that easily transforms into an extra bed for the little ones. Step out onto the deck to discover a covered kitchen. The true gem awaits in the bathroom – a deep soaking bathtub invites you to unwind while panoramic vistas unfold before you. And as the stars emerge, gather around the firepit for an unforgettable evening under the open sky.

The serenity of the surroundings, the glowing sunsets, and the close proximity to nature walks and pristine beaches make Mapauriki Retreat a truly special getaway.

EATING AND DRINKING

Mapauriki Retreat is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the electric induction with two elements, gas BBQ and outdoor firepit provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

Hop in the car and take a short drive to Kūaotunu, where you'll discover a charming selection of local cafés and your host's favourite wood-fired pizza spot, Luke's Kitchen.

A few more favourites include Pipers Cafe, The Dunes Golf Club Restaurant, Kua Kawhe, Blue Ginger and Pepper Tree Restaurant and Bar - all delicious and less than half an hour's drive away.

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is a small store just 10 minutes away in Kūaotunu. For larger supermarkets, Coromandel Township is a 25-minute drive.

THINGS TO DO

The Coromandel is a beautiful region to explore with plenty of outdoor adventures and relaxing activities. Check out the local bush and wetland walks (like New Chums Beach track), or take surf lessons with Surf Coromandel at Matarangi Beach. Snorkel the crystal-clear waters of Otama Beach, or visit the iconic Driving Creek with a railway tour, ziplining, pottery classes and other workshops on offer.

Back at your escape, unwind by the campfire, enjoy board games or soak in the bathtub. When the day comes to an end, get ready for the ultimate stargazing experience next to the firepit as you indulge in some delicious s'mores.

Your hosts at Mapauriki Retreat are James, Hazel, Chase and Matai.

James has owned this beautiful property for over 10 years, with many memories tied to it. Growing up, he spent his youth camping, building tree huts, and making the most of every school holiday immersed in nature. Now, as a father, James shares this love for the outdoors with his own children, exploring, staying overnight on boats, and seeking adventure together. This passion inspired the creation of Mapauriki Retreat on their land for others to experience.

The retreat’s name is inspired by the creek that borders the property and flows into the Whangapoua Harbour, a nod to its natural beauty and heritage.
